Okay so we are preparing my 5 year old for kindergarten! However I have put off the hassle of teaching him to tie his shoes and instead just buying the strap shoes. Buttttt he is picking out his own shoes now and is wanting laced shoes and asking to learn how to tie laces. So since I can’t be a lazy mom any more 🤷🏾‍♀️ I created a lacing board for him. I traced his shoes on to cardboard and colored paper. Laminated the paper. Poked holes. Laced it with one of dad’s old laced that I cut in half. Then hot glued it together. This could have been so much easier than it was had I not been using toddler scissors (the grown up ones have magically disappeared) and had I used a single hole puncher instead of a knife. But still came out pretty great and used his favorite colors. We will do some work with them tomorrow and I will update with new pictures. Indoor camping! Let’s start with the indoor campfire. It was basically an indoor fireplace. A LOT of research went into how to do this safely indoors and it MUST be supervised. We lined a pot with foil, took it outside, used a few drops of lighter fluid on some small branches, and waited for the fire to come down. Then brought it inside. The heat from the lit wood was just enough to toast the marshmallows. Similar to hot coals in a grill but we didn’t have coals so we used branches. We also had some camp food! We had hotdogs wrapped in crescent rolls, chili, cheese, and we had tator tots (not exactly camp food but delicious). After dinner, we roasted the marshmallows. I hate how the chocolate doesn’t melt the way I want so we used fudge stripe cookies which gave a cookie and chocolate that melted well with the toasted marshmallows between. We used blankets and built tents in the playroom. Then we turned the lights out and read books with a flashlight. Finally we used the flashlight to make shadows puppets. They ended the night extremely happy and sleeping in their tents. So much was learned during this activity and the fun we had was priceless. Update: Guess who can tie their shoes? We of course will continue practicing until it’s second nature but he can officially tie his shoes on his own. I was not expecting him to learn so it quickly! The shoes boards I created definitely paid off. He even put his foot on the board and tied over his feet. Afterwards we put on different sneakers so that he could practice with different types of laces. My three year old is half way there. She can do the first tie but her fine motor skills aren’t quite ready for the bunny ears. What better way to teach math than with money? Used a dollar store tray and cut some card stock squares to creat this activity. I labeled each section with a coin and how much that coined equaled. I then let the kids fill the middle with the change from their piggy banks. After sorting the coins correctly there were two other sections. One labeled .50 and the other 1.00. We worked on adding the money together to make larger amounts. We will do this every so often so they can know the totals in their piggy banks and I will set up dollar store days where they can take the amount they have and subtract $1 for their items. This will teach them numbers, addition, subtraction, and managing money. Today we painted ice cubes. Seems simple but it’s a huge learning experience! I chose the colors blue and purple because they typically symbolize cold and we painted ice which is cold. This helped draw the connection using sight (seeing the color) and touch (feeling the cold). Also it had this super cool effect. When they first started painting the ice the paint was dark and froze on the ice. As they continued to paint, the ice started to melt and the paint started to melt and become lighter. Science, sensory, and art. Ohh and we only have primary colors in the house meaning we had to mix blue and red to make purple.
