“I AM THAT I AM”

Ernest Withers received his first camera in high school, and refined his camera and darkroom skills in North Carolina in the 1940s at the Army School of Photography. After meeting Medgar Evers in the mid-50s Withers became the most published photographer of the Civil Rights Movement with his 1968 “I Am A Man” image from Memphis perhaps his most iconic. Almost a half-century later Stevenson University senior lecturer Chris Metzger, inspired by that image, created this wheatpaste installation for Yvonne Hardy-Phillips’ “You Are Here” project at Harford and Biddle in East Baltimore. The Baltimore Sun reports that Metzger’s “I Am That I Am” includes portraits of more than a dozen notable community members each completing the phrase in a variety of profound ways; I Am... “A Leader,” “Alive,” “True To Myself,” “Service Minded,” “Artist,” “Historian,” and many more.  @cmetzger  @youarthere_twb  @yvonnehardyphillips  @baltimoresun​  @stevensonuniversity
