Mauser 1871: Irish Volunteers Gunrunning into Dublin
On July 14th, 1914 the 50 foot pleasure yacht “Asgard” sailed into Howth harbor in Dublin with its cabin completely filled with arms. It has 900 Mauser 1871 rifles and 29,000 rounds of ammunition for the Irish Volunteers, and there is a crowd of a thousand people turned out to unload them – just daring the British authorities to try a crackdown. These rifles would ultimately become some of the most iconic weapons used in the 1916 Easter Rising.
James Connolly (1868-1916) was the working class hero of the 1916 Easter Uprising. The only member of the Provisional Government of Ireland with actual military experience, as Commandant General of the Dublin Brigade of the Army of the Irish Republic continued to issue commands from the GPO while seriously wounded. James Connolly also led the Irish Citizens Army which was formed to protect workers during the 1913 lock-out. Connolly was invited to join forces with the Irish Brotherhood for the Easter Rising and he was named one of the Vice-Presidents of the Provisional Government of Ireland.
James Connolly came from extreme poverty and spent his life passionately fighting for the rights of workers and the poor against capitalists. James Connolly was active in the Socialist movements in Ireland and the United States.
James Connolly was executed at Kilmainham Jail on 12 May 1916, tied to a chair because his wounds did not allow for him to stand in front of the firing squad.

Thomas MacDonagh and friend in a really pleasant, casual portrait. One thing we can be sure of is that this was taken no later than 1916, and as MacDonagh is mature, probably some time after 1900.
“I.R.A. Warns Eire Regime,” The Globe and Mail. April 10, 1939. Page 03.
----
Cork, Eire, April 9 (CP-Havas) - The Eire Government today was warned that if ‘at England’s behest’ it turned its guns against the outlawed Irish Republican Army, the I.R.A. ‘would strike back.’
‘As the question of the freedom and independence of Ireland is a matter between Ireland and England, the I.R.A. has decided not to wage war against brother Irishmen, but to transfer the seat of its operations to the heart of the British Empire,’ Thomas MacCurtain, son of Thomas MacCurtain, Cork lord mayor who was killed in 1920, said at the annual Easter Republican commemoration ceremony over his father’s grave.
‘The Republican army has no intention of carrying out pressure against the Free State forces,’ he said. ‘The battlefield for Irish freedom has been transferred to England, but if the Eire government at England’s behest turns its guns against us, we will strike back.’
Belfast Quiet on Anniversary.
Belfast, Northern Ireland, April 9 (CP-Havas). - The anniversary of the Dublin Easter rebellion of 1916 passed off quietly in Belfast today as vigilant police stood guard to prevent possible demonstrations by Irish Nationalists.
No attempts were made to defy the police ban on meetings. In the Nationalist areas of this Northern Ireland capital, several persons wore Easter lilies in their buttonholes as commemorative emblems of the uprising.
Youthful sympatjizers of the outlawed Irish Republican Army met Saturday night and a statement was read pledging continuation of the ‘war’ against England ‘on her own soil.’ The youths dispersed before police arrived. The statement was read outside the house which had been the home of Joseph McKelvey, shot in Dublin in 1922.
‘For the same ideals for which this man died,’ the manifesto said, ‘young soldiers of the Republic are languishing in English dungeons.’
Russian Mosin Nagant M891 rifles recovered from the SS Aud
The SS Aud was a German ship sent to deliver arms to Irish rebels who were to partake in the 1916 Easter Uprising. The rifles had been captured by German forces on the Eastern Front and were among 20,000 rifles, 10 machine guns, and 1,000,000 rounds of ammunition that was carried by the SS Aud. The weapons never made it to their intended destination as the ship was discovered by the Royal Navy forcing the crew to scuttle the ship in Cork harbor.
