with him, it is so easy, so beautiful. i feel so happy.

The occasional car tyres sound different on wet pavement,

The sky, far too white for Spring still casts a grey shadow over the room, 

The house is warm,

And I am surely paying twice in energy costs,

My bank becoming lighter and

The half moons under my eyes edging deeper into their sockets,

And still,

The scratch of my pen adds to the background symphony of study,

To the rain on the window, gurgling in the gutter, 

To the odd grumble of thunder from the clouds,

The lightning tapping of keys every so often,

The house is quiet,

But in my room there is music,

Comfortable music,

And the morning shift does not weigh on my shoulders as heavy,

Perhaps the thought of tomorrow’s night on call does,

And though my mouth doesn’t waste energy forming a smile,

My heart beats with the restful lightness of content,

And yet

Tinged with longing.

Not so much for something more exciting, 

There is so much reward in studying,

But the background orchestra is missing a player,

The room, well furnished, lacks another presence.

Yours.

I crave the mere sound of your breath in the room,

As I do me and you do you,

No idle talk, no sudden enquiry,

Just quiet solitude in togetherness.

And I wonder when doing anything without you became so hollow.
