“Easy String Art”
I love the look of all the string art I see online. But I wanted to make something that didn’t require a hammer and a bunch of nails. Besides I don’t really have a lot of wood just lying around. However I do have a lot of blank canvases. And fortunately I know how to sew by hand.
So that’s how I intended to approach this specific project. The problem was that all the sewing needles I had were too small to thread my yarn through. I did try a large plastic yarn needle that you can use for sewing into yarn. But it created too big of a hole in the canvas that, no matter how many times I knot it, the yarn would not stay attached. Fortunately I found a set of hand needles at the Buck or Two store near my home. It contained larger needles you would typically use for upholstery repairs and whatnot.
That was just the right kind of needle for this art project. I didn’t have a design in mind when I started. I just started sewing with some white yarn on a black canvas. The result was pretty cool. I tried the technique on a couple other canvases that I painted bright colours. If you want a specific design, I would pencil it out on the canvas before you start sewing. Otherwise have fun with it. This is an easy craft you can do with friends this summer.
