Island 🌴 Sushi 🍣 . Japengo is one of the newer hotel resort restaurants and is a 2019 Restaurant of the Year award winner . Given the Maui location and hotel roots, it’s not surprising that the menu is pricey, but they’ve recognized that by offering numerous items in half sizes for half the price . Splurgeworthy 🥘 . The two Maui restaurants most commonly mentioned as being splurge worthy and early reservation needed are Mama’s Fish House and Merriman’s . Due to proximity, we went with Merriman’s (also with locations on Oahu) and left happy and impressed . Sushi 🍣 Time . With a name like Miso Phat (and their fishing boat Shiso Phat) and an appearance on Guy Fieri’s ‘Diner, Drive-In, and Dives,’ it’s a bit hard to take this restaurant too seriously . Star 🌟 Chef . One of the hottest restaurants on Maui continues to be Star Noodle . With its Top Chef pedigree, modern fusion menu, and delicious dishes, reservations continue to be hard to get (hotel concierge “good luck”) and wait times over an hour . Luckily, service is fantastic and the dishes had only one miss and all arrive quickly . Shaved Ice Perfection 🧊 . Most people know Matsumoto’s Shaved Ice on Oahu . For Maui, the shaved ice spot is Ululani’s . Aloha Hawai’i 🌸 . Despite the picture perfect 🌊 views and the fresh remodeled interior, Aloha Mixed Plate underwhelmed . All the average-sized entrees were served lukewarm (ugh, cold fried rice) and the Furikake French Fries were definitely hanging out under a heat lamp .
