ADAM/RONAN THINGS YOU SAID WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WAS SLEEP (bonus points for Opal)
Adam wakes up to the soft murmur of Ronan’s voice next to him, and that’s not entirely surprising, but when another voice answers Ronan’s, Adam is a little concerned. Until he realizes it’s just Opal.
Adam doesn’t move yet. He’s pretty sure it’s the middle of the night and he wants to figure out what’s going on before he let them know he’s awake. He’s not sure whatever conversation they’re having is one he should interrupt.
“We have to be quiet,” Ronan whispers. “We don’t want to wake Adam. He’s been exhausting himself too much at school, and we want him to be well rested and happy, right?”
“Right,” Opal whispers back. Well, she tries to whisper anyway. She’s not very good at it, and Adam’s mouth twitches as he tries to hold back a smile.
“Okay,” Ronan says, his voice still gentle and low. “What’s wrong?”
“I got scared,” she answers. “It’s lonely and dark in my room. You and Adam always make me feel better. Safe.”
“Yeah, I get that,” Ronan whispers. “Adam makes me feel safe, too. Do you want me to go hang out with you in your room until you feel better?”
Opal must nod, because then Ronan says, “Okay, you go on in there. I’ll be right behind you.”
Adam waits until he hears Opal slide off the bed and cross the room, and until Ronan starts to get up before he opens his eyes and reaches for Ronan’s hand.
When he grabs it, Ronan turns his head towards him, eyes wide with surprise.
“Hey,” Adam says. “Come here real quick first.”
He tugs on Ronan’s hand and as soon as he’s close enough, Adam lifts his head and leans in so he can press a quick kiss to Ronan’s lips.
“How much of that did you hear?” Ronan asks, as he pulls away.
“Enough to know I make you feel safe,” Adam says with a smug grin.
“Shut up,” Ronan says, his gaze flicking away from Adam’s face. “Don’t get cocky. I might have just been saying that to make Opal feel better.”
“You might have been,” Adam admits. “But I don’t think you were. But it’s okay. You make me feel safe too.”
Ronan looks back at him then, a wide grin spreading over his face. “Really?”
“Yeah. Do you want me to come help with Opal?”
“No, get some more sleep. I’ve got this,” Ronan says, and then he leans in for another quick kiss before slipping out of bed.
BlueNoah I
I. Broken glass
“Okay,” Noah says. He’s crouched down in front of Blue with his hand wrapped around her ankle while she tries to balance herself on the skateboard he just gave her for Christmas. “So, you want to keep this foot in this area, and then-” he releases her ankle and his hands move to her other leg, one on her knee and one on her shin, and scoots her foot back gently. “This one around here, and make sure your knees are bent a little.”
“Okay,” she says, and then he stands up, and takes her hands instead.
“Okay. How is your balance feeling?”
“Pretty good. I think. Orla had a board when we were younger, and I used to mess around on it so I kind of know what I’m doing. I was just never very good. So, I thought you could help.”
“Okay, yeah, awesome. So, you’ll want to bend your elbows, and hold your arms like this” he says, releasing her hands and helping her get into the proper position. “Are you ready to try?” he asks.
“Yeah, I think so,” Blue says.
“Okay, so when you push off you’re going to turn your front foot forward, and then push off with your back one and once you put your back foot back on the board that’s when you turn the front one sideways again. Got that?”
“Got it,” Blue says.
“Okay, then you’re ready to go. Just take it easy and if you feel yourself losing balance slow down, but also remember everyone falls as they’re learning so it’s not the end of the world if you do, okay? Just try not to get hurt.”
