The Statue of Ebih-Il is a 25th-century BC statue of the praying figure of Ebih-Il, superintendent of the ancient city-state of Mari in eastern Syria. The statue was discovered at the Temple of Ishtar in Mari during excavations directed by French archaeologist André Parrot. It is made of gypsum, with inlays of schist, shells and lapis lazuli. Iselin Claire of the Musée du Louvre, where the statue is displayed, describes it as "a masterpiece by virtue of its craftsmanship, state of preservation, and expressive style."

I came to learn of Ebih-Il via Laure, who sent me to a post on the Louve Instgram account almost a year ago. In doing so, she mentioned how much of a resemblance there was between Ebih-Il and me. For a short while thereafter, I used a cropped version of another image of Ebih-Il by Stéphane Mouchmouche as my avatar here and there on social media, but I guess I never made a post on this Tumblr.

Excavated from the Royal Palace of Mari in what is now Eastern Syria. Ebih-il, the superintendent of Mari, would not have been familiar with the palace because he lived about 600 years before it was built.

The painting is a fragment from a larger mural painted on white plaster. The scene depicts a sacrificial procession. We know the figure on the right is the king because of his exaggerated size…
