Info from AO3 and OTW re: the Ebook Tree downloads

Wasn't sure if you'd seen this, but it might be a good thing to let the other 1k1h-ers know about so they can keep an eye on their fanfics in case someone tries to steal them. I can't link the post, but it's on my blog titled "They're at it again."

Sorry I’m just now seeing this. My life is currently consumed by grading. I’m guessing you’re talking about the ebook tree scandal? Thanks - that’s a good idea. I know five of mine are already on there - I just don’t have time to deal with it until next week!

I am pretty sure they’re bots gathering up the fics too so there’s a randomized element to it. In my case they took 2 of my artworks (on ao3) but left the others and all of my fic. Weird stuff.

hm, weird. weird for me too since they took my least popular fic and my most popular fic haha I wonder if it has anything to do with my most popular fic (my dcbb) having been posted right after my least popular fic so the bot picked up both? ehh. anyway, here’s some more info on it, nonny!

Ebooks-Tree.com stealing Fanfiction

So after rebeldrferguson posted about their fics getting stolen I looked into it and was first not alarmed, because I thought it’s for free, but obviously they seem to sell the fics, they steal. 

They have indeed some of my fics too from AO3 and I can’t see for how much they sell this stuff or anything because for register you need to give them a credit card number and I am not willing to do this. And I advice you not to give them yours!!!

It seems this is usual practice for this side and it just goes round on tumblr, also on FB and on twitter. I am not sure if I am gonna do something, because I am not sure if I have the nerv, but I probably will.

Also I think of setting my AO3 on “only registered users can read” - but I am not sure if this will stop someone from stealing because you can register quickly. 

Personally I have no problem, when it would be free, but as they seem to take money for it... 

Than I just checked over some pages, where you can find out SINCE WHEN the side exists, it seems it is new. I got April 2015. And because tumblr just comes up with it, it seems, it’s a new side. All sounds very shady.

Alright, we’ll see what will happen.

Update: Check out this link rebeldrferguson has provided me with x. Its again how you can make them remove your stuff, and it seems to be a bot that simply grabs your ffs and hosts them on the named site.

ebook-tree is so weird because I looked up on a whim because they couldn't possibly have been interested in mine but one of mine was there?? and it's the least kudo-ed fic to boot and it's not even finished?? i don't know what they're trying to accomplish with this

I suspect it’s so they’ll be less noticable. And when they ARE noticed not too many people will pay attention since smaller kudos must mean less popular authors which means quieter voice when spoken up. 

I’ve noticed that they’ve actually backed off from targeting really well-known fics (the only one I’ve searched for is The Beginner’s Guide to Communing with the Dead but I’m willing to bet none of the more popular fics are on there) so it’s probably to do with how the more popular authors have a bigger voice in the fandom so information will spread faster if they found out. Too bad for them that there are platforms like tumblr where louder blogs that care about these issues exist anyway, so they were noticed pretty fast by a lot of people.

it’s also probably so they can snatch up ppl who’re less experienced with scams, since fandoms do contain a range of age of people. I’ve reblogged it before, but this post explains the jist of it.   

Obviously I’m not an expert on the matter, but that’s what I figured :P this post and this post tells you how to take your fics down from their site, so hopefully this problem will be resolved within the next week.
