Since I was away this past weekend, I didn't have the chance earlier to sit down and go through the results of our shoot up at Edmonton Expo. But here you go! I was reading Brothers In Arms while this costume came together so I think I inadvertently channeled younger Raistlin here. Which is 100% okay in my books. Something about his youthful hybrid of self-doubt, innate talent, and resounding determination really struck a note.
I found this beautiful candid photo of you Chip. Such a pleasure to meet you while volunteering this weekend. Too much pleasure?
Part 2!
Went to the Edmonton Expo a few days ago as a last minute decision, best last minute choice. Didn't get to personally meet Bruce Timm like i wanted but I did get my friend to get something of mine signed by him. Also got to meet Jessica Nigri again. Super cool part? She remembered me from Calgary Expo just this past year. Thought it was cool that she still remembered one encounter with a fan with all the other cons and fans she's met in between April till September.
Burn Gorman is the sweetest man I've ever met Pt 2
So, Saturday at the Edmonton Expo 2014. We get there around 11:30 and decide to swing by and see if Burn is around. He was there (and I nearly died when I saw his outfit; he was wearing a dark grey vest over a white shirt and GUH), but there was a sign saying "End of the Line", because he was going to go for a quick break (even celebs need to pee, apparently, haha). So we debated a bit and decided to wait, and I am so glad we did. Burn doesn't seem to really pay attention to anything around him when he walks besides where he's walking or who he's talking to, so he didn't even notice anyone was waiting for him at first. His assigned volunteer came to let us into the area (and recognized us from the night before), and we were the only ones there. We were heading towards the table when he looked up and saw us and when I made eye contact with him he grinned and greeted us very cheerfully and noticed my cosplay first (I was standing in front of Jules, but we were both cosplaying Owen Harper (with labcoats adorned with buttons)) and Burn got really excited and came around the table, doing a little dance (and like, pumping his arms up and down) and singing "There's a doctor in the houuuse!" and it was so freaking adorable I couldn't even talk for a second. Then he came up to us and gave me a big hug and said "How are you today, darling?" with the sweetest tone (again, it struck me that he genuinely cared... and I nearly lost it when he called me 'darling. Thats one of my favourite things that Owen says out of EVERYTHING in Torchwood <3) and his hug was effing amazing. I told him I was good today, and he hugged Jules, and we asked him how he was, and he said he felt like he hadn't really woke up yet (so cute). He wandered back behind the table to sit down and we came up to it, and he told us about his little baby girl (only a week old!) that he and his wife haven't actually named yet (which is AMAZING cause I didn't even realize that he was a father!!!) I told him that I'd teared up a bit when I'd read what he'd said in my journal and that it really hit the nail on the head and he seemed pleased that he was able to help and just kind of re-iterated his advice from Friday. I mentioned at some point near the beginning of our conversation that he was our first... (words failed me)... 'thing' of the day (his photo op was our first scheduled thing that day) and he giggled and said "Oh good, I love being the first 'thing' of the day!" and I was embarrassed but I laughed and it was funny, We told him we wanted to show him our Owen cosplays (which he loved) and we got talking about all of Owen's pins. Burn said he'd been trying to track down the pins but some of them he can't remember what they are, and some he just can't find anywhere. I mentioned that he looked very Owen-ish today, what with his shirt and vest, and he grinned ("Oh, I do?! very nice!") and chuckled and talked a little about his clothing for Torchwood. He mentioned that at least for TW, they let him (and the rest of the cast, afaik) go out shopping with the costume people and the director and choose some clothes... apparently they originally wanted Owen in cowboy boots, to which both of us were like "What?! No!" and I said "That's not Owen at all!" and Burn was like "Right?! That's what I said!" so then they worked out the wardrobe that actually ended up on the show. I asked him a little more about Crimson Peak and he described it a bit, as a more traditional scary movie, with mostly suspense, no gore (to which we agreed was great), and he talked a little about working with Jim Beaver and Tom Hiddleston (again). After that we kinda felt guilty for taking up so much time as there were people joining the queue so we told him so long for now and left, telling him we'd see him later at our photo ops and at his panel.
My photo op with him was wonderful, he got really excited when he saw us and held out his arms, so I stepped into them, and he greeted me again and a "how are you, sweetie?" and asked what I wanted. I asked "can we get a hug?" for the pose and he laughed and said "well, if I hug like THIS--" and proceeds to hug me from the side, pretty much covering most of my from the camera (DIDNT CARE), "--then it looks funny, so lets try something else!" so I told him just a normal pose was fine and was trying not to die from the SQUEE building inside me. So we had our photo and it was wonderful and he is just so amazing and I pretty much floated away to wait for Jules to finish her photo with him. (She tells me he told her that she's a natural, what a sweetie <333) We went back to see him at his autograph table once more in Saturday but I can't remember why, the adrenaline of the afternoon was running SO high that I've actually forgotten some of the mid-afternoon stuff, but I know we went back. I mentioned something about being bummed that Owen is the only (original) Torchwood character to never show up on Doctor Who and he agreed that it sucked, and commented that he'd have loved to work with David Tennant (10) or now, Peter Capaldi (12). He mentioned that he found Matt Smith's seasons a bit convoluted, what with all the River Song stuff (I love those seasons and even I get confused with some of it so I don't blame him, haha). But he said he thinks the reason he was never invited to be on DW too is because of the sexuality surrounding Owen, for example in the very first TW episode, he's using that pheromone spray and when he sprays that girl, it convinces her to leave with him, so a lot of people thought it could be rape since she didn't consent on her own... and he got that, he pointed out that if the writers were going to have that in the script, that they'd have to account for that action. Besides, its not like Owen can NOW be in the show (as he so helpfully pointed out in his panel (sob)), so that subject came to a close. He asked who else we were seeing and we told him Mads Mikkelsen (Jules mentioned the misspelling of his name on the sign, which Burn thought was pretty funny) and told him Noah Wyle (for Jules), Grant Imahara, hopefully Summer Glau, etc. We left not long after that so we could do some shopping and go to Mads' panel, and then it was time for Burn's panel. It was brilliant, SO worth the wait and exchanging in our BBT photo ops so we didn't miss it. He was so sweet even in front of a big crowd, and I was pleased that a lot of the questions that he got asked were about Torchwood. A few were Game of Thrones, and only a couple of about other things, the majority was definitely TW. At the beginning the interviewer asked him to read a MadLib that the crowd would fill out, and he was supposed to do it without laughing or cracking up, because he so often plays bad, scary characters. So there was one blank where it was "part of the body" and the crowd started to giggle and murmur and Burn shook his head and laughed and was like "Just say it!" and the interviewer asked him what HE would put and Burn said "It just has to be "cocks"!" and everyone laughed and it was really funny and of course the rest of the blanks were all silly raunchy things. He barely got through the first sentence before he laughed, which was adorable, and the crowded "Ohhhh!!"'d him . But he soldiered on and got through it with just a few more giggles, and his voice was deep and "evil" for a lot of it (which was downright sexy tbh). The interviewer (who was pretty cute himself) opened the floor to questions pretty quick and this time, Jules and I decided to ask questions. We'd never done it in panels before (too nerve wracking, agh!!) but we were brave this time. I was no longer nervous talking to Burn, but talking in front of all those people scared the crap out of me (Jules too), but I was determined. My hands were shaking a bit by the time I got to the microphone, and once the crowd had stopped laughing about whatever his answer had been to the previous question (I have NO clue what it was now, my brain has erased it from the mini-panic attack I was having haha), and he looked at me and I nervously said into the mic "Hello again!" To which he replied (in a lovely, deep voice) "Hello, doctor." (because I was still wearing my Owen cosplay), which nearly stopped me dead then and there. The crowd tittered a bit in response to it and it gave me enough time to collect my thoughts and get the words out. I asked him what his absolute favourite thing had been to film on Torchwood. I meant it to be like literally his favourite scene or overall episode to shoot, but he talked about the whole fun surrounding Countrycide (when he gets accused of stealing the bath tub and they all got drunk, etc etc) but that was awesome too, Countrycide was his favourite to film and his favourite downtime betwee shoots too <3 Jules asked him about which relationship that was shown in the show (Gwen, Diane, Katie) would he have liked to explore more, which again he didn't answer very directly but he talked about how Diane's romance was a little weird and the circumstances were obviously strange, etc. And that Katie was pretty much the reason he became the cynical (kind-of-asshole) guy that he is through most of the story, and how his other relationships kind of reflected some of that, and it was all very interesting. Someone asked if he thought he'd ever be on Doctor Who and he said no, for some of the same reasons he'd told me and Jules the day before (leaving out the rape thing) and mentioned that obviously Owen couldn't be on the show now because he's likely out there somewhere, disintegrated (I whimpered at that) "but maybe there's like a toe, or something, somewhere..." which got a lot of horrified groans from Owen fans haha. He mentioned that Dragon Con is a fantastic time and recommended that everyone go see it, and that its in Atlanta (Georgia), which is "I dunno, at least 6 hours from here," to which I couldn't stop giggling because Atlanta is a lot farther than 6 hours from here and it was adorable. He also mentioned working with Karen Gillan on a new project, which got my attention, because I effing LOVE Karen Gillan, but he didn't really say what it was, so I made a note to myself to ask him the next day when we were planning to go back one last time before he left Edmonton. That's pretty much all the Burn we experienced on Saturday, so leaving it here for now because holy crap I've been typing for a long time, wow! So many amazing memories though <3
Alright, what the hell. Here's a quick preview. Can't wait to show you the ones we took inside.
