Throwback day 21 - #marchmeetthemaker ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our first trade show. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Can I just say I do not miss this?! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Young Layla thought this was a big deal, and in a way it was since it marked the release of Between the Sheets' first collections for sale. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I don’t know how I in my youth and naïveté managed to pull this together both financially and logistically. I was working a full time job and I had so much energy. I’m introverted, so after this we eschewed trade shows for market weeks by appointment in hotels near the shows. This allowed us to show our collections in a private setting, which was far better than the trade show, but still stressful. Picture hauling all the stuff of a lingerie store (clothes, mannequins, etc) in a rental car into Manhattan and double parking and hauling it all up to a hotel suite. Setting everything up only to move it all out a few days later. Markets were both physically and mentally exhausting, and I much prefer my business today selling directly to our customers. Back then I thought you had to make it in certain boutiques or department stores to succeed. At the same time, I saw early on that the retail landscape was shifting...and still is today. Hello followers, both new and old! I’m Layla, the designer & founder of Between the Sheets. I’ve noticed that there are quite a few new faces here, some bc of lingerie and some from ethical spaces, so I wanted to take a moment to craft an intro that introduces both me and my work. . I’m the daughter of a first-generation Iranian mother, lifelong vegetarian, watercolor enthusiast, recently turned home owner/gardener and dog mom. . I met my then boyfriend (now husband Josh) and shortly afterwards quit my job in the lingerie industry to design Between the Sheets’ first collections. I worked front desk at a hotel for the year between my design job and my first market. I then produced and shipped for wholesale customers for 5 years, and have transitioned to direct to consumer for the last 4. . I’m going to be joining in the meet the maker challenge starting in the next post and over the next month will share in more detail about all of the above and more. thank you for being here and I am grateful for your presence and look forward to sharing more about me and this brand that I started in my little queens apt. . A note for those that have come here from the recent commentary I shared on stories regarding ecocult, I want to again point you in the direction of some amazing people continuing to hold a candle to the sustainable fashion space.
