Saint Kateri Tekakwitha

Patroness: Ecologists, Native Americans

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, known as Lily of the Mohawks was an Algonquin–Mohawk virgin. Born in Auriesville (now part of New York), she was orphaned during a smallpox epidemic, which left her with a scarred face and impaired eyesight. In 1676 she was converted and baptized by Father Jacques de Lamberville, a Jesuit missionary. Shunned by her tribe for her faith, she escaped through 200 miles of wilderness to the Christian Native American village of Sault-Sainte-Marie. Kateri was known for her spirituality and austere lifestyle. Various miracles and supernatural events are attributed to her intercession.

My family think I'm joking when they ask me what my college course is about and I tell them it's a qualification in splashing in puddles and playing with dirt

I'm not

Two of my course mates ate dirt. One was 18. The other was 33. Everyone moulded the clay loam dirt into penises. We get overly excited to ride on tractors and get chainsaws out. We do river surveys and take the excuse to stand in the middle of the water. We take any excuse to have bonfires on company time.

This course is a qualification in splashing in puddles and playing with dirt.

Carolyn Burns

Carolyn Burns was born in 1942 in Lincoln, New Zealand. Burns is an ecologist whose research interests include microbial food webs, plankton ecology, and the impact of climate change on lakes and wetlands. She has made important contributions to conservation through her work on invasive zooplankton. From 1998 to 2005, Burns served as Head of the Department of Zoology at the University of Otago. In 2017, she won the Marsden Medal from the New Zealand Association of Scientists, and in 2018, she won the Thomson Medal from the Royal Society Te Apārangi.

Quick little vent

I love the career im going into, i love ecology and all that goes into helping our planet. But i then see my friends in tech getting 70 to 60k a few years out of college, while my field is expected to be paid 13 to 16 bucks an hour or less for ours. Some of my relatives are boasting to me that they will probably have more money then i will have. I want to be able to do great things, but i also want to live. I want to be able to get the fancy ingredients for dinner. i want to buy a house with a yard to plant a pollinator garden. But here we ecologists are, we are getting tired of talking to the world to do something, Especially company's, and gettingso few results. And when we start yelling, we are told we are being over dramatic. We want to save the planet we live on, but we want to be paid to live as well.
