SN: helping to put the spotlight on citizens who are actively working to preserve green spaces, waterways and reduce sprawl. This is a snapshot of community action that may be small in sale but heavy on significance. PHOTO CREDIT: Cypress trees reflect in Lake Pickett, east of the Econ river, in this view from the UCF Rowing Center on the south shore, Tuesday, September 8, 2015. Residents in the area are expressing concerns about proposed, large-scale housing developments that could threaten their rural lifestyle. (Joe Burbank / Orlando Sentinel) Soon, the Orange County Commission will again consider changing a law that curbs growth and protects area wetlands to allow development of more than 4,000 new homes in the Lake Pickett area. The changes, allowing up to 12 units per acre in the county's designated rural area, would go against the current policy of protecting rural lands. And if the County Commission repeals its protections and allows urban development east of the Econlockhatchee River, Orange County's environment and quality of life will suffer. Local Response In 2010, the County Commission, led by former Mayor Rich Crotty, had the foresight, wisdom and backbone to reject intense urban development east of the Econlockhatchee River. We urge the current commission and Mayor Teresa Jacobs to follow in their footsteps. 1000 Friends of Florida works every day to build better communities and to save special places. The greater Orlando area can become better, and Orange County can protect the Econlockhatchee River — one of its truly special places — by staying true to its comprehensive plan and rejecting the proposed Lake Pickett developments.
