Midnight Mass + Text posts (1/?)
unpopular opinion but i need to be a hater about midnight mass for a second. because i was already frustrated about how tf can u have 60 whole minutes for your finale and overlook so many opportunities for insanely poignant and impactful moments in favor of endless sermonizing about the meaning of life or whatever that ultimately leaves ur audience feeling no catharsis or emotional resolution but!!!! just now!!! i found the script online!!! and it's actually even worse than i thought!! because it ISN'T that mike flanagan didn't realize what scenes were missing. HE DID. AND HE WROTE THOSE SCENES. AND THEN HE CUT THEM. spoilers below obv
like. what do you mean!! what do you mean you cut the lines where ed tells annie about the letter and they put it together that riley truly is dead but it wasn't his fault and he didn't run away from them and he kept his sobriety to the end!! what do you mean you cut the lines where they get to die knowing their baby boy was brave and strong and did the right thing till the very last moment and all he wanted was to come home to them!!
what do you mean you cut the lines where ali reunites with hassan and tells him i didnt hurt anyone and his dad says of course you didn't and so we get actual resolution about what happens to their relationship after ali has succumbed to the cult brainwashing and turned away from his faith and been groomed into betraying his dad!! and we know that yes it was too late and yes they were both doomed but at least ali died knowing that despite everything his dad never stopped loving him and never thought he was a monster and never ever lost faith in his son's goodness even when ali was in the depths of evil and his dad couldn't save him from it! and hassan gets to die with his son knowing that he forgave him because how could he not forgive him that's his son that's his baby that's his whole world!!!!!
and for what!! what was possibly worth getting rid of these scenes for? ANOTHER paragraph of erin greene having a teenage boy on shrooms epiphany?? another sermon??? another opportunity for mike flanagan to use father pruitt and erin as mouthpieces for his own personal beliefs repeating himself over and over while the other characters die with only the bare minimum of acknowledgment to their entire storylines??? sorry but no amount of metaphors about our atoms returning to the cosmos is going to give me closure when there's literally no emotional resolution for half the fucking cast of characters!!!
it is not enough that we see milly forgive john. it is not enough to take it on faith that the rest of these conversations happened off-camera and the audience just doesn't see it but we should laugh it off and fill in the blanks ourselves. i dont care. i dont care!!!!!!! show me that riley's suffering and his bravery was acknowledged by someone other than his love interest!!! show me that ali was a real fully-fledged person and son and not just some plot device who could have been any random muslim kid bc he was only being used as a narrative pawn for proving a point about christian fundamentalism!!! show me that hassan didnt let his kid die thinking his dad hated him!!!
anyway. a plague of locusts upon this show i swear to god. justice must be served
Full disclosure: I am a monster
Warren Flynn watching Riley and Ed beef it out
Ranking Midnight Mass Characters
Riley: I like him and definitely a fave to watch; I like how they handle his atheism, not really trying to "fix him" (well the characters do, but not the writers) and make it a message of him coming to some revelation to mend his past or making him the "cool" unbothered non-religious character that shows like to do (he's very bothered by things not necessarily having to do with the religious aspect (the religious aspect is a big part t/o his storyline, but he isn't bothered by his choice with not being religious is what I mean); he's dissatisfied by life and walks thru town with a blank kind of expression (affectionate)
Erin: didn't expect to like her, but I found myself caring about her by the end; steps up to be a leader for people when she doesn't have to; a beautiful personal vision of life and death; she was just trying to find peace from her past and fulfill a happier future
Sheriff Hassan: his scenes with Joe somehow filled my heart with empathy; his speech on religion was a great moment to witness on tv; his son kinda pmo in the second to last episode, but it's ok
Mama Gunning: I love how she's one of the only people to have sense to the broken Word of the priest and I love she tells her daughter not to go back to his service (which I doubt would be a problem for her in the first place) when she attends a service again once she she's better to leave the house
(Riley's dad) Ed Flynn: not good at expressing feelings, but their relationship feels real. He's not perfect, but as a character, his flaws are more engaging than others with more likeable characteristics. also him saying "I did my best" just like Riley did...absolutely beautiful storytelling
Joe: I don't entirely like him, but I'm intrigued by him (was slightly rooting for him); this show basically ends in you rooting for the "offenders" and hating some (many) of the self-righteous. He deserved better than he got
Sarah Gunning: I liked her, especially at first, but she didn't really do much so I can't put her higher; I wish that she did more, tbh or that we got her backstory on her career or personal life more
(Riley's mom) Annie Flynn: I found her ok, then in the middle something about her rubbed me the wrong way; I was happy with her in the end; her calling out Bev Keane was a bonus; I think I like her more than Riley's dad, but I liked watching him more overall (they are both utterly clueless and don't listen to the people who try to warn them and that frustrated me in the moment, but it makes sense they didn't want to accept truths re:Riley)
Father Paul: my feelings for him pretty much stayed the same from beginning until his speech in the church to Mildred in the last episode; his incomprehensible chants for (spoiler alert) The Character Who Can't Be Named never get old; my interpretation is he has a lot of guilt yet keeps lying about it to justify his actions and overall convince himself of some largely-held Christian beliefs
Bev: if you're looking for a character you hate from beginning to end, look no further than her
There's not enough on the kids. or the Church Team Bodyguards (who I don't like) to rank them
midnight mass + the onion headlines 1/?
can we talk about how the Flynn's boat, more specifically Ed Flynn's, is named Annie?
Annie. after his wife. god, their love always guts me
A lot of people felt Bev deserved a harsher death but tbh for someone who spent her whole life telling herself she loved god when really she loved the power she could wield under the banner of god, dying terrified and scrambling to hide in the dirt from the rising sun and burning to death all whilst knowing deep in her heart her she is well and truly damned while everyone else welcomes death and god with open arms is a poetic and important ending
