This version of the character is just as closed off from the world as Carrie. She spent years as an extreme stay-at-home mom — even the state didn’t know she and her daughter were in the home — but when her husband, Ralph, dies on the job in a freak construction accident, she watches as Carrie goes to school for the first time. Meanwhile, she joins the work force.
Are you gonna give us Margaret's boss Elt, Mike? And Margaret who wants him to burn in a special blue corner of hell? Love that they kept the construction accident, even though it takes place later in Carrie and Margaret's lives.
Margaret is a conspiracy theorist, someone who talks about a war waged against Christian believers and family values — a trait exacerbated by her husband when he was alive. Sloyan didn’t want to dive down a Reddit rabbit hole because she didn’t want to lean into anything, like a laptop, the character wouldn’t have access to in the home. “Margaret finds such comfort in conspiracies,” she explains, “because she doesn’t understand the world she’s existing in.”
Called it! I guessed Mike was gonna make her a conspiracy theorist 😅😅She's still a Christian fanatic, just a slightly different, modernized version. She'd probably think Reddit isn't radical enough for her. In the book, Ralph White walked around carrying a Bible and a gun, in case he met the Antichrist, so I really like this approach to his character, too.
In what is arguably the most radical change from the source material, Sloyan says, “She loves Carrie more than anything in the world, but like many family members, we’re bound to each other, but we don’t exactly see the world the same way. She loves Carrie, but she doesn’t understand Carrie.”
“Margaret’s reaction to fear, instead of trying to learn or to understand, is to really go to war with the world,” Sloyan adds. “Margaret’s really just all suspicion and fear and hatred.”
She's different from the book version, but I kinda like the change. Her abuse comes from a desire to protect her daughter and an inability to understand her. “Margaret’s really just all suspicion and fear and hatred” is a phrase which also describes Margaret in the book.
