Lessons Learned:
My work is to convince myself of my own value - to my partner and my sons.
Politics is inevitable. If you don't pay attention to the context, you can get killed.
#1 thing that helps create businesses - What really pisses you off? If not me, who? If not now, when? Find the right person and push them to do it.
1st entrepreneurial endeavor - Engineering consulting company after getting bought out, got drunk, picked a spot on the map, went to Singapore, spoke with customers, found a need, did it.
Be incredibly impatient with how you use your time.
Great leaders are measured by the leaders that you create.
We all have to die, none of us know when - because of that every minute counts
Family time - It doesn't matter what you say, the way you measure your priorities are how you spend your time and money.
Make your priorities linear. That way when a dilemma comes up, you know what to pick.
Most important thing - Be intentional about the decision making. Don't just jump on the train and see where you go. Constantly measure how you're spending your time. If you're in the weeds, true back up before it becomes a problem.
Caution for Young Acton MBAs: Pay attention to our elders who have walked our path and have great lessons for us.
Biggest regrets for most older people (all humans across all boundaries): Wish I paid attention to the things that mattered to me, take care of your body, enjoy the ride.
Politics: Power is a game. You can play to win or you can play to lose, but everyone is playing. Ignoring the government is arrogance.
2-ways you get power: You can take it from people or people can give it to you. Always be cognizant of those people you represent.
Pain is inevitable. Suffering is a choice. You choose what you do with the pain. You have to be committed to the end goal to achieve change in yourself through the pain. Putting yourself in trying situations tests you, causes pain, and
How do you seek out great people? You are constantly surrounded with them and you don't listen. It's serendipity. You just have to be open enough to recognize it.
The secret to success in life is about the love you give, not the love you take. "I want the story so I can see the magic person underneath."
Charity and Philanthropy: If there are no strings attached to the money or time donated, people are unaccountable. Hold a process around your philanthropy. Book: Tracy - Inspired Philanthropy
Job: Low intrinsic and low extrinsic rewards
Career: High extrinsic and low intrinsic rewards
Mission: High intrinsic and low extrinsic
Calling: High extrinsic and high intrinsic
Normal path outlined above... skip it. Find something the world needs that it will pay you for.
Zero hours / day about myself. 24 hours per day about other people. How can I help others? When I meet someone else - I am asking myself how I can help others?
Best way to find what somebody is all about is asking - What do you dream? Just silently listen. Each syncopation is another level of revealing themselves. Leave it ambiguous.
Everyone is important.
Communication - It doesn't matter what you say or think, it matters how they perceive it. 2 reasons to communicate - Entertainment & to get someone to act differently. The ask if it makes sense and when they report it back to you. It's rare that we need to be declarative.
