Asking Big Questions

It’s 6:30 AM and your alarm goes off. Do you press snooze and roll back over, or do you fight the urge and get up to start your day? It’s the weekend and you have a free day to yourself. Do you sit in bed with your laptop and halfheartedly and aimlessly answer emails all day, or do you set yourself up in an environment where you can be productive to tackle items on your to do list?

Up until recently, I was often someone who did the latter option in both of those scenarios because on their own, those actions seemed like small, isolated choices that I didn’t see negatively impacting my life in the long run. Blinded by my own preference for instant gratification, it was easy to lose sight of my longer term goals. I’ll wake up at 6:30 AM tomorrow, I thought to myself. I’ll get work done tomorrow. Then before I knew it, it had been two weeks and tomorrow hadn’t happened yet.

These little choices add up, so I recently started pushing myself to find ways to tackle this inertia. I realized that I couldn’t trust myself to simply check things off a to do list because I hadn’t trained myself to be that dependable yet. It became clear to me I wasn’t excited about what I was doing. That needed to change.

To combat my complacency, I decided to start asking myself a question regularly throughout the day: How uncomfortable can I make myself feel right now? How can I continue improving myself?
