‘Time’s Hand’ Located at the junction of pathways in front of the children’s playground the Edgar’s Field mosaic folly mimics the shape of the large rock outcrop at the back of the park which houses a carved shrine to the Roman goddess Minerva probably carved by the quarry workers when the area was the source of stone for the Roman city of Deva. ‘Time’s Hand’ The legend goes that in 973 AD/CE following his coronation at Bath, King Edgar was rowed up the river Dee from his residence in what is now Edgar’s Field Park, by suppliant Kings including Oslac of York, Kenneth II of Scotland and Máel Coluim I of Strathclyde, symbolically solidifying his rule. ‘Time’s Hand’ The local stone from the former quarry at Edgar’s Field and the surrounding area has that distinctive pink colour that is so recognisable in Chester’s architecture. Marks of the quarry can still be seen in the park.
