Claudius: The Unlikely Roman Emperor

Of the series of Roman Emperors known as the 'Julio-Claudians', Claudius is perhaps the most overlooked, sandwiched as he was between the more exciting careers of Caligula and Nero. However, his story is fascinating in its own right. For most of his life, he had been a laughingstock, ostracized by his own family for his disabilities. But then, he became emperor - his reign saw the conquest of Britain, the construction of new roads and aqueducts, and the scandalous machinations of his wife, Messalina.

Marcus Aurelius

Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius was born #onthisday in AD 121. Aurelius' philosophical 'meditations' are considered to be one of the world's most influential works, incorporating stoic principles he used to cope with life as a warrior and leader. Aurelius' reign was troubled by natural disasters and war. His personal writings outline a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure, and tranquility above happiness.

This striking half-life-sized bronze portrait of Aurelius, with inlaid glass eyes and coil-shaped beard details, dates back to AD 161-180. It was ploughed up in a field near Brackley in Northamptonshire, near the sites of a number of significant Roman villas.

However, it would be another three years before Constantius was ready to launch a fleet to cross the Channel and land two armies on the British coast. Littlecote Roman Villa

These ruins are in a better state than most of our roads.The Romans were ahead of their time. -TommyC. 

This site has the best Roman mosaic (the Orpheus mosaic) I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing! The Roman villa began its life as a military establishment, just a short period of time later the military buildings were replaced with agricultural buildings, namely farming huts around 70AD. From then on the site was redeveloped several times and around 360AD the site become entrenched with religious use. During this period a triconch hall was built with its own bath suite, the remnants of its hypocaust are still visible today. -RoxyB.

‘Time’s Hand’ Located at the junction of pathways in front of the children’s playground the Edgar’s Field mosaic folly mimics the shape of the large rock outcrop at the back of the park which houses a carved shrine to the Roman goddess Minerva probably carved by the quarry workers when the area was the source of stone for the Roman city of Deva.
