Last night's dumpling & jazz fest at Mee Heng Low Noodle House and for the first time in my life I didn't order any noodles. His "cole slaw" is really interesting too--I HATE traditional cole slaw--it's not kimchi, it is fresh and crunchy and brightly pickled with a fairly serious kick of heat. And the black bean ribs are some SERIOUS fatty/salty bits--you'll need plenty of wine to cut them. Speaking of wine, the list has been gone through and OUT is the trusty cheap Mosel and IN is the entirely serviceable local Gewurtz. At 25$, his corkage remains one of the steeper in the area, but the curt list is full of entirely workable bottles. Absolutely one of my favorite 2 or 3 places in town to slink late-night and incognito into a dark corner and get treated to great food, professional service, and live music for grown-ups. Upstairs at Mee Heng Low: Wed thru Sat nights. Often the band is listed on their FB page, but it's a fairly-regular circle of rotating locals. Best-kept secret in SLO. Paté is BACK on the menu at Moon Over Avila and it's completely different than Chef Dahan's. Much less of a *country* style, and preserved with a thick layer of fat to spread on your bread! Washing it all down with a cheap little fun Sangiovese from Chianti.
