The Ediety (or Merovingian) Knot
This tie knot was most popularized when worn by the Merovingian character in The Matrix Reloaded, which we all willed ourselves to like at the time. As you see, the hook with this knot is that the narrow end winds up laying atop the wide end of the tie. From what I've read, and my experience in Tie Week 2013 thus far, it reminds me of the Atlantic knot in general style. It's the Kuato of ties. A little surprise right there in front of you, asking you to open your mind.
The act of tying this is fascinating. All the tutorials I saw online, the most direct and easiest way actually had you tie the knot backwards, wherein the seam is facing out while you loop and knot. Once complete, you take the tie off, spin it around 180 degrees, then put it back on. Check this guy out; he makes it look easy as hell. Without fail, this method resulted in a clean knot.
I think this tie is best worn under a vest or sweater, because the most interesting part is the business end you see here. The opposite end of it winds up with both the thin and wide ends dangling down, and the narrow end just isn't long enough to match the length of the wide end. And I'm not buying or making extra long ties to make this look good. So a vest or sweater that could cover all but the top few inches would make this much more aesthetically pleasing.
Are there any necktie knots you'd like to see me try out? Drop me a line in my ask box, or post a comment here. I'll see if I can't close out the week with one more.
