It’s not unusual for these two to cross paths, and they can be spotted anywhere humans reside. After all, greed and gluttony oftentimes go hand in hand with one another, brothers born of the same brood. One who simply craves for the sake of it, the other never truly satiated. If you walk past a sewer grate and hear the distant sound of animals fighting, shrieking and howling in a desperate bid for whatever scraps they find, simply shrug your shoulders and walk away. Do not interrupt them, they will soon be gone.

They are everywhere and yet nowhere. In glimpses here and there you might see one of them. One slender and lithe, the other fairly porky, both small. You think there ought to be no fear of them, but think twice.

Vermin are often small, and more deadly than one thinks.

They might often reside in the dregs of human society, beneath abandoned subway stations or within the walls of homes far too large that hold far less than they should. He has no nest, no reason for it. There are far too many of him to take root in one location. Ignore the scratching in your walls, it’s probably just the rats again. You make a note to pick up a couple more traps and some bait.

More often than not, they are scavengers, picking at pieces here and there. Keep an eye out for any pets or small children, though. They often disappear, and the kind old lady down the street has lost another cat. It will never be found.

But vermin will always grow, and they will seek out larger prey. Scraps will only satisfy them for so long.

Occasionally they may move to more…forgiving hunting grounds, where the disappearance of an animal may be less noticeable. On fishing docks of local hatcheries, or out the outskirts of a farming community. Where one keeps their stocks and barns filled to the brim with food, never knowing of the threat that lurks within their midst.

In mining communities, men and their families who travel and work for the promise of something more, something always out of their reach. They don’t know what hides down in the caves, in offshoots of tunnels hidden in the dark. One slip can send them tunneling down, into the depths of the darkness to teeth and claws. Of hungry maws who consume and consume and consume until there’s nothing left.

After all, accidents always abound when hard labor is involved.
