My biggest and I mean BIGGEST pet peeve is when people get pressed that other people head canon their favorite characters as apart of the lgbtq community. This is mainly for the people all over my for you page who are saying they hope Wednesday doesn’t turn into Stranger Things meaning they hope that people don’t head canon their favorite characters as gay. Like what is it to you? It’s not like it’s canon. It’s literally not affecting you in any way and excuse us for wanting representation. Let our favorite characters be gay to us. Okay? Don’t get annoyed at us for that.
♥ Enid is usually the little spoon because Wednesday feels claustrophobic if she's fully embraced for too long.
♥ Wednesday's love language is acts of service, and Enid's is physical touch and words of affirmation. They work on little compromises to make sure each is getting what they need!
♥ Enid thrives when trying new things, and Wednesday prefers a routine (though she doesn't mind as much when Enid is the one to disrupt it. If Ajax did what Enid has done, there would be one less Gorgon at Nevermore). Their latest adventure included a day-long tour of the Addams Family Mansion and Cemetary, which Enid embraced as quickly as she could (she's still scared of spiders, but Wednesday is working on that). It helped Wednesday with her love of familiarity, and it allowed Enid to enjoy something new.
♥ Over time, they work out systems to help Wednesday communicate more comfortably. This includes verbal and nonverbal rituals. On stressful days, Enid will usually make gestures for physical things, and Wednesday will nod yes or no (it's usually yes, she starts to use her girlfriend's hugs as mini recharges, but she usually passes on public kisses, unless they're on the cheek).
♥ Wednesday writes poems and other short, formal pieces for Enid (she knows her girl loves sweet nothings, and she inherited her father's penchant for flattery. Wednesday will never admit this). She seals them carefully, each a perfectly pressed black wax seal with her initials. Enid carefully pulls the seals off and keeps them in the top drawer of her nightstand. The letters stay in the bottom drawer, under a hidden panel. She knows Wednesday would die if anyone else read her letters full of feelings.
♥ Enid always plans little dates and lets Wednesday know in advance so she can fit them into her routine. She also fixates on brewing coffee so Wednesday doesn't have to to go the Weathervane for her quads. Enid eventually begins making specialty drinks like over-the-top hot cocoa and such for herself, but she always offers some to Wednesday, who usually takes a polite sip.
♥ While cuddling in Enid's bed after a slow make-out sesh, Wednesday admits that some of Enid's room decor actually hurts her eyes. The next morning, Enid swapped those pieces (a neon green tapestry and a bright orange lamp) for similar items in more pastel hues.
♥ Since their beds are so small, they sleep separately. Whenever they want to cuddle (or other things) more comfortably, they'll push their beds together and zip-tie the legs so they won't come apart (it was Enid's idea. Wednesday appreciates her deviance rubbing off on her girlfriend).
Xavier Thrope is the definition of “tell, don’t show” and it’s about time we talk about it
Is this another essay that nobody will read on why Xavier needs much improvement for season two of Wednesday? Yes, yes it is.
Now sit down and listen this has kept me up all night.
Since watching Wednesday I have spent a lot of time thinking on each character and my personal interpretation and opinions on them, and as I’ve been doing this I’ve come to realise that Xavier is by far the weakest character in the show and the conclusion I’ve come up with to why I believe this is because the writers always tell us what we’re supposed to see him as rather than show us.
Let's begin with what we know of any trauma he might have.
In episode four we learn that Tyler and some of his friends assaulted and ruined Xavier's mural the year before, and for something that most shows will show as a serious show of character, the writers of Wednesday play this event down a lot.
We don’t even get to hear what happened in Xavier's own words, we have no way of knowing how bad it was or how it affected Xavier, all we know is that it was bad enough for Tyler to have to go to a Bootcamp and court sentenced therapy, but in the same breath, our main protagonist also has to go to court sentenced therapy for what she did in the opening scene of the show, something that they then actually compare the assault to in the same scene. We hear more about it from Tyler than we do from Xavier and then it becomes a cute “we’re not so different” scene for Tyler and Wednesday. Wednesday even calls it a “lousy prank.”
In fact, this is so played down that I forgot that it was even that bad. I just remembered it as them ruining his mural and not the assault to the fact that I disregarded it in my last long post about Xavier’s character.
Now, Xavier isn’t the only character to have a traumatic past that’s barely mentioned in the show.
Tyler was groomed and manipulated by Mrs Thornhill, and similar to Xavier's past we don’t hear about it through Tyler, we hear about it through Wednesday, but the show goes in a different and much better direction when handling Tyler.
While Wednesday is explaining how Tyler was treated, we see glimpses and flashbacks to how Mrs Thornhill treated him and how he was hurt by her to become what he was.
There’s no dialogue in this section and it’s never brought up again but clearly, it is much more affected by getting through to the viewers just what Tyler has been through. We saw him chained up, how his mum was used against him, and how Mrs Thornhill was inappropriate with him and it had a much more lasting effect on us because we saw it, also because we saw the consequences of what had happened.
Another example of the writer’s using small flashbacks is with Wednesday when she tells the story of her old pet scorpion who died. It’s another non-dialogue flashback with Wednesday explaining what happened over it and again, helping us understand Wednesday more. She explains that her scorpion dying is the reason why she doesn’t cry so when we see her tear up when Thing nearly dies it adds to the scene because we have a better understanding of how much Thing nearly dying affected her.
With Xavier, the writers could’ve shown us how he has been affected by what happened but they don’t. It doesn’t seem to have any lasting effect on him other than him disliking Tyler (not even hate, just dislike) and that’s played off as just casually jealousy because Wednesday likes Tyler and not him.
Just something as little as those things with Xavier could’ve gone a long way in helping us understand his character a little bit more.
Because this happens a lot with him.
I mentioned this in my last post but for anyone reading this who hasn’t read that, Xavier’s daddy issues are another thing that is told to us and not shown.
All we know about Xavier's dad is that he is a famous seer and that he and Xavier have a rocky relationship.
Xavier isn’t the only character in the show to have parental issues, in fact, three of my favourite characters, Edin, Tyler and Bianca, also have plot lines including their parents, but the difference with these arcs is that we see how Edin, Tyler and Bianca’s relationships with their parents are, we don’t see this with Xavier.
The reasoning for why we don’t see Xavier interact with his father is that he doesn’t show up for parent day, something that is implied to be a habit of his, but that doesn’t mean that we couldn’t see anything. Something as small as seeing one side of an ending phone conversation with his dad at the beginning of a scene could’ve done a lot to give us a good indication of what he was dealing with, but instead, we are only told through small comments about what their relationship is like.
Ajax also mentions Xavier's dad during episode three, he tells Edin about how Xavier is super competitive and that he thinks it’s because he has a lot of pressure on him because his dad is famous.
This is actually an interesting concept to have and explore and the pressure that Xavier feels could explain a lot of his most unlikeable traits, those being his constant jealousy and need to be liked. But that’s as far as they go with it. Such an interesting interpretation gets overlooked by the fact that it’s sandwiched between Edin and Ajax’s developing relationship. You don’t leave that scene thinking about Xavier and his father, you leave it being excited to see Ajax and Edin on a date (or dread, depending on who you ship.)
Speaking of ships of course I’m going to talk about Xavier and Wednesday because the writers do this to them also.
Something that I’ve realised about Xavier and Wednesday's relationship is that there's a bit of back and forth between them but not really and that does them more harm than good.
Let me explain.
In episode four Xavier gets mad at Wednesday for snooping around his art and then for the duration of episode five they don’t talk. But then in episode six Xavier is just casually at her birthday party as if nothing ever happened at all.
Later in the episode, Wednesday tells him that she “didn’t know we were on speaking terms” and Xavier responds with “Me showing up to your surprise party should've been a hint.”
But the question is, why? Why did Xavier decide to forgive Wednesday? What changed for him to not be mad anymore? Cause she didn’t apologise or do anything to try to make up for hurting his feelings. He just disappeared for the majority of episode five as we focused more on the Addams family itself and then came back all ready to be friends.
And then he gets annoyed at Wednesday for still not being ready to speak to him (her words) because she still thinks he’s the monster. Now his being upset over her suspecting him is valid, but why did he think she would’ve changed her mind when nothing changed between the last time they spoke.
Xavier gets annoyed with Wednesday a lot in the series (mostly for good reasons) but then suddenly resets and decides that he wants to be her friend again despite the fact that nothing has changed. I feel like that's what gets me so much about his character. He says after being arrested that “being your friend should come with a warning label” when Wednesday has never tried to be anything she’s not. She has not been a friend to Xavier until the last moments of the final episode.
Compare this to Edin who also has a falling out with Wednesday during the season.
Edin gets mad at Wednesday and moves out of their room in episode six, they then have another argument at the beginning of episode seven, in the same episode Wednesday has a conversation with Mrs Thornhill about her relationship with Edin and how much they helped each other (we can assume she had a similar conversation with Edin but that’s unconfirmed.) Then, at the end of the episode, Edin moves back in and the two of them have a conversation about why. Edin tells Wednesday that she decided not to room with Yoko because she needed more boundaries and tells Wednesday that ”we work.” Wednesday also admits to “evolving” when she tells Edin to skip the tape. Edin says that she won’t apologise for all of the things Wednesday said about her during their second argument and Wednesday accepts that.
See, with the conflict between Wednesday and Edin, they have communication to get through it. Mrs Thornhill helps open Wednesday's eyes about how much of an impact Edin has on her and Edin explains why she has decided to forgive Wednesday.
With Xavier and Wednesday, we see non of this. Xavier doesn’t explain why he’s ready to speak with her now (not that Wednesday ever asks) and Wednesday never accepts that she was “wrong” (wrong in Edin's case being Wednesday being annoyed at her habits and in Xavier's case that he was the monster.) They go from “Xavier has an obvious crush on Wednesday while Wednesday thinks he’s the monster,” to “Xavier is upset with Wednesday because she thinks he’s the monster” back to “Xavier has an obvious crush on Wednesday while Wednesday thinks he’s the monster,” with no in between or any development. We have no indication of why Xavier just magically decided to forgive Wednesday when circumstances haven't changed.
And no, it's not love. Nobody in this show is in love yet, feelings are there for sure but feeling that you just developed for a girl who has been nothing but neglectful, disrespectful and rude to you can and should go away. (and they definitely shouldn’t be a reason why you would put up with this disrespect and rudeness.)
So yeah, as much as Xavier is my least favourite character I wish we would’ve gotten more scenes of him during the fallout, having a bit more of Xavier in episode five, seeing as it is parent's day and his dad is visibly absent.
In fact, the only storyline containing Xavier where we are shown and not told is his past relationship with Bianca and that only paints him in a bad light.
I truly do believe that just some small changes to how we are presented Xavier could make him such a more interesting a likeable character especially considering we have characters like Wednesday and Tyler who are more well-received despite the fact that they have both done terrible things, we understand them a little more because the show has shown us what they have been through and how it affected them.
I really hope they do better with Xavier in season two, especially if he’s getting more screen time then he did in season one.
little side note if you want to read by other long ass post about Xavier you can find that one here :)
