When Ruthven talks to Noé in the cafe, he mentions how he used to teach students until they were all killed. Then he touches his eyepatch. Probably bc whatever injured him also killed his students.

Well, in gevaudan we see Ruthven go from two eyes to one over the course of his visits to Chloé. Whatever happened in those years, likely the human/vampire war, was what killed NOT ONLY his students, but also his ability to empathize with humanity (and the reason he bites noé later)
