Craziest slow burn since Mulder and Scully

I finally caught up with Midnight Burger but the working hours still remained, so I started relistening to WTTH.

I think episode 6 is going to keep being my favorite. It just has everything. I like WTTH not solely because of Verge and Deidre, in fact season 2 cemented my fondness of Hood's Pocket as a whole. But in season one they certainly were the stars, and it's such a guilty pleasure. Like... this pairing plays out like a thousand fics or romance plots I've read or imagined in my teenage years, it's not complicated, there's nothing deeper or hidden than what we see, not even many plot twists - they had what, two quarrels along the way? It's simple. Aaaand it's 100% fire ❤️‍🔥 I think I like it not least because it's so simple. That's what I'd wish to have for a relationship (only in my case it's more likely to be a qpr). Honesty (even from Verge, although not right away, which is a lot even so), respect, care, all of it. It's pretty transparent.

I like how Verge changed by WTTH, and their character in general. There's a trope of cool, sexy, flirty, sarcastic character who likes to play mind games and is emotionally distant no matter how they appear, a trickster, a "gotcha". Someone you can't trust, but you really, really want to. You can help them, they're just misunderstood! You can handle them.

Verge starts and appears similar to this trope, but changes pretty quickly even in the miniseries about young Leif. Yeah they were more cinical back then, but even then they were honest and pretty devoted when it came to their feelings for Leif. No playing games, no being dodgy. The relationship of those two was still complicated to say the least, both have wised up since then, but there was honesty and transparency nonetheless.

So thanks to their sarcasm Verge may look like a trickster devil may care archetype at the first glance, but they're not. They were kinda forced into this persona, built it up to survive and keep their sanity? And by WTTH they sound so tired of everything. No wonder they dropped their defences so quickly, being accepted with open arms like that.

So on the surface the pairing looks like a lot of other ones I remember from my youth, but it has one key difference. Both people are honest and genuine, they treasure each other. It's more mature, I guess? And by mature I don't mean sex. Deidre is pretty confident and knows what she wants when she sees it (and says it directly). Verge isn't trying to be mysterious for the sake of it, they just want a quiet, nice, happy life, and Deidre seems like a big part of it, so they open up to this future, even when it wasn't certain. Like... these two hit all my favorite points but in a good, healthy way?? I didn't think it was possible.

Also I actually dropped Young Leif spin off right before Verge appeared (who knew!), so I knew nothing of them when starting WTTH for the first time. Now I finished YL and restarted WTTH, and I'm kinda glad I went in that order that first time? It's just fun from a certain pov, because one of saddest things about Verge (that rightfully makes them angry) is how people assume things about them and judge them because of some preconceived notions. So I kinda had a chance to get the experience Hood's Pocket folks were getting? Just coming across this stranger, learning more bits and pieces about them and getting to truly know them. I think I'd have felt differently if I listened to YL first. Maybe not by much, but differently. And now I appreciate being able to have another pov after catching up with YL in addition. Tbh, now Verge surprises me with some of their choices that Verge from YL wouldn't have done. It's really interesting. So without knowing it I listened in the best possible order for me 😄
