Sustained Project - Romance novel
I read a book a little while ago and I was frustrated. In my pursuit to be a better writer, I’ve taken advice to read more books. The secondary part of this advice has been to read more ‘terrible’ books. The book that I’m going to talk about fits into the second category. Most of the terrible books I analysed and dropped. But this one was one that stayed with me. There are mid romance novels and…

Plot Holes and Typos and Errors! Oh, my! #thursdayblogs #grammarmatters #creativewriting http://wp.me/p3ReHY-55
If you’ve ever edited your own writing, chances are that you have likely been amazed at the number of mistakes in your work. Even more maddening are the times when you continue to find glaring errors in what you had felt was a polished piece. Repeatedly spotting new problems in the same work starts to make you wonder if you are incapable of reading all of the words in a sentence or wondering if…

Friday morning I watched the rough cut of our first show up to bat in the new Real Electric Adventures series.
Okay so first: the photography.
Gorgeous.
Wonderful.
Inspired.
Seriously. There's a lot of footage In which I could just lose myself visually. Compelling... is the word.
So there's that.
The second thing that struck me, though, is that this rough cut is rougher than what I usually do. By which I mean to say my previous rough cuts were pretty sincerely polished. With fully realized soundtracks. With mixes within spitting distance of done. Same deal with the color correction. Map animations were usually in there as well.
Those rough cuts looked finished.
This time around, I produced something that's stripped down. No animations, not even an open. No transitions other than what I provided through editing. Some of those transitions work but others are waiting for... what? I don't know. Maybe effects transitions. Maybe quick locator maps. Maybe info/title screens. No idea.
Really. No. Idea.
Which is the point.
This particular rough cut is fully plain on purpose. It's the essentials of the show without the accessories. Oh sure... there are some new things editorially. But no design. No branding. No music, even. Just the essentials onto which we can project a number of things. We can consider a number of things. We can try.
Any number of things.
This isn't simply a first cut of one of our shows, you see. It's pretty much the model home of our community of programs. And right now's the time to determine what it looks like, what it feels like, and why.
So there's a lot of imagining going on here. A lot of mental iteration as we figure out how to brand this thing. How to establish its personality. How to bring out the very best of our collective work.
The very.
Best.
We wanna make it sing in a way we haven't before.
And I won't lie.
That is straight up intimidating. But also this:
It's a lot of fun.
:-)
