Writer PSA
I need people to learn the difference between self-conscious, subconscious, and unconscious, because I have seen writers mix them up far too often.
The one you are looking for is almost always subconscious, but most people mistake it for unconscious.
Your subconscious is a minor part of processing that happens in the background of thought. It is usually a result of familiarity or repetition with a situation or person, but not necessarily. For example:
Your character is an assassin, and is very skilled at sensing danger because of how often she is around it -> familiarity, and repetition She gets a bad feeling about whatever is happening, and places a hand on the hilt of her dagger without thinking about it. Therefore, she places a hand on her dagger subconsciously.
Unconscious means the character is asleep, or has been knocked out. They are in a state where active thought is not possible.
So no, he did not unconsciously ruffle his hair when the cute barista complemented him, he did it subconsciously. -> note, no familiarity, nor repetition, but still an action without thought
The last one has to do with doubt and/or fear. It is an action the character is aware they are making usually in fear of judgement. Example:
A college student is sitting in the library studying for their test frantically. A group passes by whispering while looking at them, and suddenly the character feels the compulsion to fix their appearance. Then they would self-consciously fix their hair/clothes/whatever.
In summary:
Subconscious -> Action done without the character thinking about it.
Self-conscious -> Action taken by character for fear of how they are perceived
Unconscious -> Character is asleep.
Does this make sense?
