Making this film was very interesting. Started of with the idea of making a show reel then went to turning skyfall into a hip hop edit, from that we went to an idea that was going to incorporate match cut, accelerated montage and hip hop edit. Our final idea was a simple match cut idea.
When we went out filming our 3rd idea we quickly found out that we both weren’t that interested in filming it. Our plan was to both pick a shape then film as many short clips of that shape we could find all over the city and in college. After about an hour of filming we found it was actually allot more difficult than we thought and we both really quickly lost interest. While filming that idea we also filmed two clips of rob walking towards the camera and were thinking about cutting them together to make a smooth match cut edit. When it came to re thinking our idea we chose to carry on filming the walking sequence but change the scenery to locations all over Plymouth.
I think what went well in our production is how fluid some of the edits are in the walk sequence some of them are really smooth and give the effect of the scenery changing but not the person moving place.
I didn’t like how some of the clips are slightly over exposed. As it was such a sunny day it was really hard to see the LCD screen properly on the camera to get the correct levels. If we were going to film the video again I would have defiantly used the zacuto cross fire rig and have the LCD attachment on it to be able to see the LCD properly.
I think another thing we should have thought about was choreographing the walking. We should have considered and probably got rob to actually walk to the beat so it had an even stronger connection with the song and made the edit more powerful and easier to edit. Another thing that would have made it easier would have to got rob to stand at the position of the camera and walk away the same amount of footsteps in every location so he always starts the same distance away and to start walking towards the camera on the same foot. All things to make the editing process and the matching of shots work allot better and smoother.
We could have also looked more into having different scenery so it was very different in each shot to make a much better juxtaposing composition. I think we should have also made a decision to make the light on rob the same in every shot so the cut between each shot would look allot more fluid and smooth.
When it came to the editing there was allot of re positioning to make sure rob was in the center of the screen to make the transition as fluid as possible. If we were going to film it again I would have defiantly used a tripod to get the shot so there is no movement while he is walking. I would have also used a small bit of tape as a line on the screen to mark the center of the screen so that rob would be in the right place as the grid disappears when you press record. This would have made it allot easier to edit as there wouldn’t need to be any unnecessary video position adjustments.
When it came to editing in avid I actually quite enjoyed it. I like learning new software and finishing out new things and watching tutorial videos. However avid never ran properly, allot of the time when trying to edit it would never playback our footage in smooth real time it would lag and jolt and stall and as we were editing to a very distinct beat it made it very difficult. I will defiantly try and use AVID again as I think it really makes you think about your edit and when it comes to more narrative videos it think it will really help you achieve the best and most powerful edit.
Overall I’m quite happy with how our video turned out and I think if I was going to do it again I would focus on making it easier to edit and make it so it was as fluid and smooth as possible buy using a tripod for one thing. I would defiantly like to spend more time on filming and get allot different locations. There are quite allot of different things I want to do if I made it again but overall I’m happy with it.
Accelerated Montage, Match Cut, Hip Hop. This is from the footage we got when we were filming our 3rd idea. We wanted it to be faster flicking through the images of the shapes so it gives a better effect. Because of the small amount of shots we had we edited it together like this. We never got round to filming any more but this is a tester for what we were going to do for our 3rd idea.

The Mill are a special effects group that work on massive Hollywood films all the way down to music videos and commercials. There based in London, New York and Los Angeles. Every year they put out a showreel of what they have been up to. There showreels are always about 3 – 5 minuets long and consist of allot of short clips from all the best bits of work they have done over the year.
The Mill are such a big company that I don’t feel like they need to put out a showreel as there already known in the industry and they don’t really need to market themselves to get more work as they already get allot. I feel like they put out there showreels so that people like me who are interested in film can see what they do and what they have contributed to. Its fun watching there showreels and recognising bits from your favourite movies, TV shows, adverts and music videos.
Their showreels are always very well edited. Their visuals go extremely well with the music and allot of the time the lyrics in the music will correspond with the visuals. It all helps the video become stronger and more powerful. Making sure you have a well-edited showreel is just as big as making sure you have some good footage to show off in it. If you have a poorly edited showreel it will make your footage look not as nearly as good as it is, plus if you have a well edited showreel you are showing off your editing techniques.
The mill are such a big company and do so much that they sometimes put out very specialised showreels for example they have a Winter 2013 Crowd & Stadium showreel where they show of there Crowd and Stadium films and adverts.
I would love to make a showreel that is a energetic and impressive as the showreels the mill makes. I would try and use the same technique of making he music really fit with the visuals and the timing of the edit.
This is another show reel for a special effects artist. It shows 4 different videos he has made and test he has done.
Personally I don’t think this show reel is that great. It shows what he can do and it does that well but it doesn’t make what he can do look amazing. It might be because I’m looking at it from a non special effects artist point of view but its quite boring.
The problem is that he has show us pretty much the full length of each thing he has done granted what he has done is really good. It needs to be much shorter and tightened there are bits that really don’t need to be in there. For example the clip of the jeep, we see it stationary for a good 5 seconds they we start to rotate round it. If he got rid of the first little bit it would have made a big difference.
I understand why he shows the working and what went into making each thing but that again could have been made shorter to almost show less and I think that in tern would have made it slightly more interesting. It would be hard to make a short and snappy showreel out of only 4 videos but adding in the behind the scenes special effects part would fill it out and make it allot more interesting.
Personally I think he should make another one with more footage and keep it short and snappy and start of big, maybe have to plain crash first to get the viewers attention. Also to get rid of the scene breaks and introductory titles, if you are unknown no one cares about hat they just want to see what you can do, leave that till the end so if they make it all the way threw then they find out who you are and how to contact you.
I love this short film it seems to start of about illusions but then starts to head towards life in general.
I really like this video mainly for the incredible cinematography and the really heavily stylised theme that runs through the whole video.
This short documentary shows us Li Hongbo's work with paper sculptures
Li Hongbo, is an artist that works with mostly paper, he says that when he makes his work he always tries to make it with every day things basically trying to give a house hold object a different meaning or make people look at it different and see it be used in ways you that had never crossed your mind.
The sculptures he makes are incredible some of his sculptures like the tree trunk and the rock don’t look like a sculpture they look like a solid tree trunk and a solid rock. Like he says in the documentary "at first you don’t think they could possibly move" witch you do because its a really good sculpture.
On top of the fact its a good sculpture you have the fact that its entirely made out of paper and that its not just made out of a block of stacked paper that its glued together in such a way you can stretch it, expand it, bend it and contract it back to its original shape.
Its defiantly a very long process to make a new sculpture as he has to glue each peace of paper onto of each other by hand with a stencil he has made not to mention the fact that ones he has got a block of stacked paper he then has to sculpt it. I think the result of his work is really incredible and I would love to have a go at making something like it on a smaller scale.
