"Dinner is ready", Misa entered the lounge and noticed that only Mystogan remained.
"Thank you. I'm sorry it seems the girls are still playing upstairs, something called dress-up", Mystogan explained unsure of whether he should remain seated or search for his partner.
"Then I will get them. It seems our Mio has caused some trouble again", the mother let out a sigh but was betrayed by the soft smile gracing her lips. She showed Mystogan to their secluded table and he noticed how lavishly decorated it was. Paying it no mind, he sat down and waited for his partner to arrive.
Minutes later he could hear Mio run down the stairs followed by Y/N murmuring something inaudible to Mystogan.
When the door opened to reveal her Mystogan forgot how to breathe for a moment.
The young woman looked completely different than 30 minutes before. She was now wearing a F/C dress with a V neckline, the hem of the skirt ending just above her knees. The look was completed by matching stockings and heels. Her H/C hair was in a half up-do and framed her face perfectly. Even the make-up seemed much more extravagent than her usual casual look.
"I didn't know Mio would take playing dress-up so seriously", she laughed nervously. Mystogan seemed to sense Y/N's embarassment but no words seemed to form from his thoughts.
He swiftly stood up, hitting his knee on the table in the motion. Taking two steps around the table he pulled back the second chair and motioned for Y/N to take a seat.
The mage wasn't sure what he was doing but at least this seemed the least inappropriate action he could think of. The woman gratefully sat down and when Mystogan joined her at the table he could not help but stare again. Swallowing thickly he decided he finally had to say something. The weather? The guild? I could discuss the next steps for our mission or- "You look beautiful", the words left his lips before his mind could catch up. Immediately blood rushed to his cheeks and he seriously considered using mist body to disappear. But when he finally gathered the courage to look Y/N in the face again, her cheeks seemed to be just as red.
"T-thank you, Mystogan", her voice barely more than a whisper but the smile on her face ultimately reassured Mystogan. If a compliment could put such an endearing smile on her face, Mystogan wanted to do nothing else than compliment her until the end of time.
Fortunately there was no time for awkward silence. Misa came out of the kitchen and served the mages several delicious looking dishes.
"Oh my, the way our Mio dressed you up, it looks like you two are on a date," she smiled. When she stood behind Y/N she winked at Mystogan encouragingly. The man could only bring a hand up to cover his the little part of his face that was revealed. Y/N didn't seem to notice his dilemma and started to dig in, "This is great. I haven't seen so many dishes on the table since the last time I went on a job with Natsu."
"Do you often go on missions with Natsu and the others?", the man asked, glad about the change of topic.
Y/N seemed to think about it, "Sometimes. I'm not on any specific team, but if my healing abilities are needed or I just need to make some money, others let me join them on missions. The Master isn't that comfortable with letting me take long journeys by myself."
Mystogan nodded understandingly and was curious about which other teams she joined occasionally. "I like joining Shadow Gear since they're also fun but not as rowdy. The Thunder Tribe also let me join on a few missions and unexpectedly it went better than I thought", she chuckled at the memory of Evergreen reprimanding the guys whenever they were rude or inappropriate.
"You even get along with Laxus?", the blue-haired mage was mildly suprised.
"Well in the past I did my best to avoid him but still be polite. But recently, he has really changed. Surely the good beating he received on the Fantasia weekend had some merit after all", she cackled and Mystogan noted with great amusement that even she could be a little mean sometimes.
"By the way, thank you for protecting Fairy Tail, then and always. I realize we never seem to get the chance to thank you." Now this tucked at Mystogan's heartstrings. He was used to appearing and leaving without his guild comrades noticing, but only now that he received such a simple expression of gratitude, he noticed how much he had longed to hear this. To be acknowledged as a guild member. He could feel the smile forming on his lips, " Even if I can't show myself easily, I'll always protect Fairy Tail."
In between their conversations, Y/N accepted Misa's offer of wine, telling herself she deserved it after the last 24 hours. The mages kept chatting about their experiences on missions and travels. As the time passed, spent drinking and laughing, the sun had already set by the time the Fairy Tail mages left the restaurant. Y/N managed to talk Mystogan into joining her in drinking, but as it turns out he had a higher tolerance than the younger woman. She was a giggling mess, occasionally stumbling over the pavement but catching her balance just in time. Every now and then she would stroll off ahead or to the side to look a the closed shops or town monuments. A small sigh escaped Mystogan's lips, although he did have to admit that seeing his partner so free and uninhibited was amusing. In this moment, she actually appeared her age, as apposed to her usual calm conduct.
Lost in his thoughts he noticed too late how two men had approached Y/N, asking her to join them for drinks. "I'm sorry, I won't go with you", she made herself clear but gave them a polite smile.
"Oh come on, I'm sure you'll have a good time", one of the guys reached out to grab her hand. He had no chance to though as Mystogan reached his arms around Y/N's shoulder and collarbone, swiftly pulling her into him.
"She's going with me", he clenched his jaw and towered over the two men. Grumbling an apology, they disappeared into the night. Letting out another sigh, he hooked his arm with hers and kept her close to his body, "You really are too popular to be walking around drunk."
Y/N looked up at him with wide eyes, "Fret none, I wouldn't have gone with them. Besides, you're much more handsome anyways."
"I thought you didn't look at my face yesterday," he chuckled, not really believing that she had looked.
"Of course I didn't!", she gasped, "but I don't need to see your face to know that you are attractive. Besides," she turned towards him and put a hand on his chest, "I did see your body though." The smirk on her face caught Mystogan off-guard and all blood rushed to his face. Y/N's flat palm on his chest seemed to burn a hole through his body.
"You're such a flirt when drunk", Mystogan placed his hand over hers, trying to ignore his throbbing heart beat. The woman laughed out, "How funny. Laxus said something similar once." A strange wave of discomfort washed over Mystogan and he tightened his hold on Y/N's hand.
"Are you alright?", she gazed at him with a puzzled expression.
"O-Of course", he yelped and released her hand at once. He couldn't believe himself. Was he really jealous at the thought of Y/N complimenting another man? It couldn't be. This would mean that he held special affections for her.
Too absorbed in this inner conflict, Mystogan almost didn't notice they had arrived at the inn. Walking up the steep stairwell proved to be no easy task for Y/N in her intoxicated state. When she lost her balance only Mystogan's quick reaction prevented her fall. One hand grabbing her arm and the other steadying her lower bacl, the man could only sigh for the umpteenth time today as Y/N slurred out an apology. This was followed by a shriek when she was lifted up in his arms as if she weighed no more than a grocery bag. The initial surprise soon faded and she snuggled into the warmth of his chest comfortably.
"Carrying me like this makes you look like a real prince", she tried hard not to slur her words.
You have no idea, Mystogan though to himself.
