Bella pretended not to notice.
She noticed anyway.
The blond boy at the far table had been staring ever since she and her girlfriend walked into the cafeteria.
Not just looking.
Staring.
It was... unsettling.
She glanced across the room again.
His eyes met hers for the briefest second before he looked away so quickly it almost seemed painful.
"Weird," she muttered.
Her girlfriend looked up from her lunch with a questioning expression.
Bella smiled reassuringly.
"Nothing."
The girl wasn't convinced.
She turned just enough to follow Bella's gaze.
The moment she spotted Edward Cullen, her shoulders tensed.
His eyes were already back on them.
Or...
On Bella.
Without a word, she reached under the table and slipped her hand into Bella's.
Bella squeezed gently.
"I'm okay."
Another small nod.
Across the cafeteria, Emmett watched the exchange with growing confusion.
"He seriously hasn't blinked in, like, five minutes."
Rosalie rolled her eyes.
"He's being ridiculous."
Edward ignored them.
He couldn't stop listening.
Human conversations usually blurred into meaningless background noise.
Bella's voice didn't.
"...you'll like Angela," Bella was saying softly. "She seemed nice yesterday."
Her girlfriend hesitated before signing a quick response with one hand while keeping the other wrapped around Bella's.
Bella smiled immediately.
"We'll sit with her tomorrow if you want."
Another shy smile.
Edward frowned.
She signs.
He hadn't noticed at first.
Now he watched more carefully.
Bella understood every movement without hesitation.
No confusion.
No delay.
Years of practice.
His throat burned harder.
Not because of the scent this time.
Because she looked...
Happy.
Entirely focused on the girl beside her.
Alice quietly set her tray down.
"Edward."
He didn't answer.
"Stop watching them."
"I can't."
"You can."
"I can't."
Jasper finally spoke, his voice calm.
"You're upsetting everyone."
Edward looked at him.
"What?"
Jasper met his eyes evenly.
"You're angry."
Edward stiffened.
"I am not."
"You are."
Jasper's expression didn't change.
"I can feel it."
Edward looked away.
He wanted to deny it.
Instead, he realized Jasper was right.
It wasn't anger.
Not exactly.
It was frustration.
Confusion.
An instinct he despised because it made no sense.
Bella wasn't his mate.
She wasn't meant for him.
She was simply...
Irresistible in the worst possible way.
A blood singer.
Nothing more.
So why did seeing her laugh with someone else make something inside him twist?
Before he could examine the thought further, the lunch bell rang.
Students poured into the hallways.
The noise level doubled instantly.
Bella stood, slinging her backpack over one shoulder.
"You ready?"
Her girlfriend nodded, but the crowded cafeteria entrance made her hesitate.
Bella noticed immediately.
"It's okay."
She stepped closer until their shoulders touched.
"We'll go slow."
Together they moved into the stream of students.
Bella kept one hand linked with hers, gently guiding her through the crowd so no one bumped into her.
Edward watched from across the room.
Every movement was instinctive.
Bella never let go.
Never rushed her.
Never looked embarrassed.
She simply stayed beside her, matching her pace as though it were the most natural thing in the world.
Alice saw the future shift.
In one version, Edward followed them.
In another, he stayed where he was.
She looked at her brother sharply.
"Don't."
Edward didn't move.
His hands clenched at his sides.
For once, he listened.
He stayed exactly where he was as Bella and her girlfriend disappeared into the hallway together.
But even after they were gone—
The scent of Bella Swan lingered.
And Edward Cullen knew this was only the beginning.
