The film centers on Christmas enthusiast party planners Ella (Krakow) and her sister, Marianne, who clash with their client, Edward (MacFarlane), who is a not-so-jolly toy company CEO.
Paul Epworth works as a liaison office of sorts between the indie scenes and the pop machines with his production work, so he's like Nokia, i.e. connecting people. Of course, he also got to collaborate with many alternative musicians who had an affinity for pop. For instance, Friendly Fires should be seen as one of the modern equivalent of the 80's synthpop bands, though they achieve this without sounding too retro. I keep hearing, among others, the sonic valleys by Orchestral Maneouvres In The Dark and Heaven 17, but the group positions them more buoyantly. While this doesn't suggest they should be seen only as a party band, they do great dancefloor anthems. Check the tune in the link to hear what I mean and marvel at the way they reach the high.
