Alice had been in the mood for pudding, and it was no surprise that she was going to make a trip to the kitchens in the middle of the night. Why else would their Common Room be located so close to the kitchens, right? That was Alice’s logic, and if ever she got into any sort of trouble for one of her expeditions, that’s probably what she would say to plead her case.
There were usually a few students conversing with elves who worked late into the night to make sure the food was prepared for the next day while they took their own snacks. It was a majority Hufflepuff, then the late night Ravenclaws and Gryffndor and Slytherin students were bound to turn up, but it really felt like a dead zone when Alice entered.
She only saw a boy in his Hufflepuff robes who was far taller than she as she stepped in, and she knew exactly who it was. Ted Tonks, in the flesh.
And as payback for a short comment he’d made earlier in the day, she was going to take this opportunity to give him a little start, so Alice ran over as lightly as possible on her feet before hopping and piggybacking herself onto the older student.
"Hi!" She said, gleefully as she hopped off him and revealed herself to the boy. "You look fifty shades of purple right now, Ted, and it’s absolutely brilliant. I wish I’d brought a camera! It’s brilliant!"
She was holding herself from laughing, because by the look on his face she knew it wouldn’t be nice to add insult to injury. She started chatting with him while she filled a bowl up with some leftover pudding from dinner.
It was a few bites in that she noticed something under her knitted sweater sleeve. Her arm felt itchy, as if she’d a rash or something. Alice put her spoon down in the bowl to reach for it when her eyes widened at the sight of her wrist.
If Ted had been scared before, Alice could actually feel her heart rate fasten. She could honestly say that she was about to experience cardiac arrest, because there was something on her arm and it was glowing so brightly that the word couldn’t be mistaken.
She quickly covered her arm back up before Ted could see what was causing the anguish on her face. She eyed the boy over, the older boy who had never had any terrible intentions towards anyone, really. Who Alice was extremely fond of. He couldn’t be the cause of this. No, maybe it was a late reaction! She had touched Ted plenty of times. Alice knew that the Shine only came the first time you touched someone. Or maybe it was that her fate had just been sealed.
"Merlin, Ted," Alice said, faking a yawn. "This pudding’s really got me falling asleep. I’m going back first. I’ll see you in the morning."
No way, Alice couldn’t see that happening. She thought she’d be a lucky one. One of those who never had to experience those words, the ones who died of old age. Apparently not. Apparently the ultimate end was going to be caused by someone who she couldn’t imagine hurt a fly without a good enough reason.
