Happy Lemon, 39151 Cedar Blvd, Newark, CA 94560
I’ve had Happy Lemon drinks quite a few times in SoCal and they’re good but not up there with my favorite places. If you love salted cheese foam, and I don’t, you’ll probably appreciate Happy Lemon much more than I do. They’re known for their salted cheese foam and whole lemon drinks. I’d prefer a stronger tea flavor. My experiences have been mixed and they don’t have that many milk tea options.
Happy Lemon has drinks, egg puff waffles, and salted cheese ice cream. The drinks fall into several categories: salted cheese, fresh lemon, freshly squeezed lemon, classic beverages, freshly brewed tea, fresh fruit matcha, lemon slushy with the option to add toppings (boba, jellies, pudding, taro, aloe, salted cheese, tiramisu cheese, yakult, etc.). You can also specify level of sweetness and the preferred amount of ice. The drinks come in two sizes, Medium and Large.
* Grapefruit oolong tea with soy milk ($4.50 + 75 cents for soy milk, 25% sweetness, 50% ice): They make the drink with fresh grapefruit. It even has tiny bits of fresh pulp (and I found one grapefruit seed). The oolong added a floral quality but the tea flavor wasn’t strong. I could taste the soy milk and it wasn’t too creamy or heavy. The drink was nice and cold without much ice.
The service was okay. But they have a good system where you can see your drink on the monitor and can tell how long it takes for them to make it. The service was better at the larger, nicer Union City location.

Egg Puffs
Bubble Puff & Tea, 12 Harkness Ave., Pasadena, CA 91106
The Pencil space was vacant for a long time…until Bubble Puff & Tea came along. It’s very close to PCC, so a lot of students hang out there. Yes, they serve bubble puffs (waffles) and tea drinks. They also have fried snacks, sandwiches, soy pudding, and ice cream. The bubble waffles come in different flavors and they can add filling. Drinks include cheese foam drinks, sea salt foam drinks, milk tea, brewed tea, fresh fruit tea, and smoothies.
* Popcorn chicken meal ($8.50): The meal included popcorn chicken, corn, steamed broccoli and steamed rice. It was as plain as it sounds. The popcorn chicken didn’t taste freshly fried. I suspect it was microwaved? Kinda sad. I wouldn’t get it again. It’s overpriced for the quality.
* Soy milk ($3.75): The soy milk was fine. It tasted like Asian soy milk and it wasn’t sweetened. You can get it sweetened if you’d like. I doubt they made it so they couldn’t really mess it up.
There’s free wi-fi, annoying pop music, outlets, and a restroom. It sounds laptop camping friendly, but parking is a challenge in the area. The place is cute: mostly white with black accents, white tile, white brick counter, lots of overhead lights. Neon sign.

Bubble Waffles (gai dan jai) @Special flavors recommendation
Egg waffles or eggballs (gai dan jai) have been a feature of Hong Kong street life since the 1950s and are still one of the most popular Hong Kong street snacks. These iconic Hong Kong-style waffles are made in a dimpled, double-sided griddle, resulting in hollow, circular “egg puffs”—hence the name gai dan zai, or “little eggs.”
Its hollowness is the key, delivering a crispy exterior while the inside is soft and fluffy inside, freshly grilled and not too crispy, each vendor claims their own secret recipe, but essentially, the waffles are made from a kind of pancake batter poured into a specially shaped mould and heated until done. You should only ever eat them piping hot and freshly made.
Aside from thetraditional yellow egg balls, creative flavors havebeen popping up in recent years: chocolate, taro, strawberry, green tea and even nutella-filled varieties.
-I would like to introduce one of these special flavors--Macha red bean (Japanese Green Tea + Sweet Red bean) to you. It is very popular in Hong Kong recently.Last Sunday, I specially went to Jordan to try this new flavor. It was 3pm, I’m lucky that there was not many people queued for buying waffles.
Their waffles were freshly made. After 10 minutes’ waiting, the piping hot Bubble Waffles was readied. The vendor put all the Bubble Waffles in front of their mini fan, in order to cool down the waffles. Don’t underestimate this step, since this is the key step to make the Bubble Waffles become crispy outside and soft inside. Without this essential step, it would not be crispy at all. Of course, it also helps cooling down the temperature of the food, so that we could enjoy the Bubble Waffles as soon as possible.
The vendor passed me the Macha red bean Bubble Waffles, it spread its delicious aroma, I can’t wait to taste it! Its edge was lightly burned. I gently tore one of the globular bubbles, it’s clear to see that there was a red bean inside the green tea stuffing. It wasn't so strong in taste for green tea but it tasted good, ideally fluffy and chewy. The red beans were not well-distributed into every “bubble” and bubbles on the edge, didn’t filled with enough batter. Its quality is quite good in general.
Here is some information for you Shop name: 乜嘜雞蛋仔 McQ Price of Macha red bean Bubble Waffle: HK$ 19 Location: Shop 6, G/F, Keybond Commercial Building, 38 Ferry Street, Jordan Opening hour: 12:00-21:00

Shooting Star Cafe
Saturday, April 26, 2014. After having a really awful Friday night, I wanted to do nothing more than sleep all day and just forget about everything. Still, I forced my sleep-deprived ass to go to water practice in Oakland the next morning, and I'm really glad I did. Maybe it's the physical exertion, the company, or the yummy food, but I seem to always end up in a better mood after training with the dragon boat team.
Today was the last day of practice before our May race next weekend, so we trained more intensively with a bunch of race pieces. I was feeling aggravated and decided to let it out by screaming the Power 10's. My teammates were pleasantly surprised since I never "cheer" while paddling, and afterward kept telling me good job and that I motivated them LOL nope I was just letting out my aggression in a productive manner!
The Power 10's succeeded in letting me blow off some steam, but to make my mood even better, second practice got canceled! (Some of my teammates and I had formed a prayer circle beforehand, asking God to cancel the afternoon practice. I believe there truly is a God now.) We decided to grab lunch at Chinatown, which is awesome because I had yet to visit the one in Oakland. Their fountain has live fish in it!
We ate at Shooting Star Cafe, which is located on 1068 Webster St, Oakland, CA 94607. Giving them free promo because this restaurant is ah-mazing. First of all, their decorations are super cute and match with their starry theme. Secondly, right when we walked in the door, the food smelled delicious. PLZ SPONSOR ME because I would totally eat there again!!
I love their menu cover (so pretty!) but the contents inside are even more savory!! It was so difficult choosing which food to order because they had a variety of options that AAAAAALL looked good. I wanted to eat everything, EVERYTHING. I should have taken a picture of their dessert menu too because it was clear that they do not fuck around with dessert.
Their coolest feature on the menu was the horoscope drinks. They had a special fruit drink for each astrology sign, which is actually a great idea to match with their starry theme. My teammates ordered those drinks as well as some egg puffs as appetizers!
I ordered the stewed ham and chicken with noodles because I love me some carbs. My meal included free soup, salad, and milk tea! DISCLAIMER: IF YOU OFFER COMPLEMENTARY MILK TEA TO ME I AM AUTOMATICALLY SOLD ON YOUR BUSINESS. A+ JOB.
Selfie with my car group! We were later interrupted by some *ahem* freeloaders. Tryna freeload off of our zodiac drinks and egg puffs huh?! (Ok I freeloaded off of those too, cough.)
Spent the rest of the car trip singing along to songs on the radio. In my defense, I was keeping our driver awake since he was tired too. Again, I really enjoyed second practice being canceled because for once, we got to return to Davis while it was still sunny out!
P.S. I took some food to-go from the cafe and am now eating it while typing this blog entry. YUMMMM~
