Hi ! I have a question since I'm a bit confused with some informations of this chapter ... Is there a clear a difference between "Subjects of Ymir" and Eldians ? I always thought it was 2 different designations for the same people, but now Reiner mentions "a different race of Eldians who sucked up to Fritz a century ago" ... So what's the real deal then ?
You’re not alone in the confusion. The Eldian history that opens Volume 22 uses the terms interchangeably. The “Subjects of Ymir” are the Eldian people. This is the race of people who are connected by Paths. They share Ymir’s ability to become titans. They can be controlled by the Coordinate.
The Nobles, the Ackermans and the East Sea Clan are consistently presented as minority bloodlines (or clans) who are part of the Eldian Empire and yet are free from these issues. This would indicate they aren’t true Subjects of Ymir.
And here is where the confusion lies. Can they be Subjects of Ymir yet be free of the curse? If they aren’t Subjects of Ymir, can they still be Eldian? If they aren’t Eldian, how did they gain so much power?
Since talk of bloodlines has come up in the narrative on a consistent basis, the real deal will eventually become clear. Mikasa’s inclusion in the East Sea Clan has thus far been a footnote in the manga. Maybe both of these topics will explored at the same time.
