THE OKLAHOMA CITY BOMBING
The attack.
On April 19th, 1995, Timothy Mcviegh and Terry Nichols, radicalized by the siege on Waco and the standoff at Ruby ridge as well as a federal ban on assault weapons, detonated an AN/FO fertilizer bomb inside of a rental truck that was parked outside of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building.
This attack killed 169 people and injured 684. More than 1/3 of the building itself had been destroyed, 324 other buildings in the area were damaged, 86 vehicles were also destroyed ($652 million dollars in damage). A rescue worker was also hit by falling debris, which is the 169th death.
This event was the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history.
After the attack.
Within only 90 minutes of the explosion, Mcveigh was stopped by Oklahoma highway patrolman Charlie Hanger for driving without a license plate and subsequently was arrested for illegal weapons possession. Forensics linked Mcveigh and Nichols to the attack and nichols turned himself in. Both were charged within days and later on Michael and Lori fortier were linked as accomplices.
Tried in 1997, Mcveigh was sentenced to death by lethal injection, Nichols was sentenced to life without parole
The unforeseeable future
This event would go on to be an inspiration for EH And DK (more specifically EH) in the col. High school massacre. With EH writing that he wishes to top Mcveigh, and the massacre had originally being planned for April 19th. To honor the 4th anniversary of Timothy as well as the Waco siege The day was pushed to the 20th because of having to acquire ammunition.
"Most terrorists target symbols of the system they abhor − generally, iconic government buildings. EH followed the same logic. He understood that the cornerstone of his plan was the explosives," Cullen wrote. "EH didn’t have the political agenda of a terrorist, but he had adopted terrorist tactics."
