15 Amazing online tools

          Al Tomkins is the senior faculty for broadcasting and online content at The Poynter Institute. He led a session Saturday morning showcasing 15 new online tools that have the ability to change the way a journalist presents a story. The following are the tools that he mentioned with a brief description:snipandshare: Google Chrome released this extension this morning and it makes posting content such as GIFs, still images, video or words to social media much easier. It is free to sign up and easy to use.

flightradar24: Track every flight in the world on a live feed. Can be used to find out if planes are having issues and where exactly in the world they are at all times.

juxtapose.knightlab: Create a photo slider in 60 seconds or less. Compare similar pieces of media in an interactive way. A great way to show change over a long period of time.

periscope: “Experience the world through someone else’s eyes.” Periscope allows the users to live broadcast themselves or surroundings and interact with those watching. Great for the future of news but creates a bigger responsibility for journalists. What is OK to broadcast live?

thinglink: Create an interactive photo with links and information relating to the picture.

wirewax: Very similar to thinglink but instead of creating interactive photos, videos can be made interactive.

videolicious: An app only available on Apple products. Film and edit short videos quickly and easily.

photosphere: Take a 360 degree picture that the viewer can decide what parts to look at. Not a great tool for moving objects. A descriptive audio track can also be recorded over the picture.

translate: Google translate does live translation on your phone. Will translate audio and photos. “Now that’s some shit right there, boy.” -Al Tomkins

canva: Make professional looking graphics in a short amount of time.

steller: Create a photo flip book that is embeddable and linkable

  mapalist: You pick the data, and this will map it for free. Import a spreadsheet with data and an interactive map will be created with all of the information.

voicebase: Transcribing an interview can be a tedious task. VoiceBase will transcribe your interview for free. *Not error free*

popuparchive: Makes audio searchable. Upload an audio file and search for specific words and phrases.

screenflow: One of many screen capture programs that will record your screen with audio.

#EIJ14 - That's a Wrap

With #EIJ14 in the books, find out what attendees thought about the event and what they expect of next year’s conference in Orlando. Also check out some excellent statistics on Excellence in Journalism 2014.

The 950 journalist who attended Excellence in Journalism 2014 were able to choose from no fewer than 52 workshops and breakout sessions. The Super Sessions with Kara Swisher and Dick Ebersol attracted about 300 people each, while roughly 40 to 50 people came to most of the workshops.

CNN Newsource spoiled journalists with a big Opening Night Reception at the Wildhorse Saloon.

160 journalists attended the President’s Installation Banquet Saturday night.

The Society of Professional Journalists raised more than $9000 at its Legal Defense Fund Silent and Live Auctions, which “financially supports journalists waging legal battles to defend the freedom of speech and the press.”

The new code of ethics was the most retweeted topics of the conference, and the event website, ExcellenceinJournalism.org, was viewed no fewer than 87,346 times.

Vote SPJ: Election Results

Attendees and registered SPJ members were able to vote for the upcoming year’s directors and representatives since Thursday when the Excellence in Journalism conference began. And doing so in appropriate fashion for the digital age; for the first time members were able to cast their votes via an online voting system.

The position applications opened in the spring. Since then, candidates have campaigned for their hopeful spots in the society with live streamed candidate speeches and the creation of social media groups to raise awareness of their ambitions. Restricted against posting signs in the hotel and convention center, getting support from current board members and using the SPJ membership database for political purposes, the process was thorough. Their last chance to campaign was at the EIJ conference, at the SPJ Opening Business session on Thursday, Sept. 4.

The election results for the officer positions for 2014-2015 SPJ Board of Directors were released at Saturday’s SPJ Closing Business Session. They are as follows.
