You were enjoying lunch with a friend who had just had a baby. Eisuke was walking by getting ready for a lunch meeting when he saw you holding the infant in your arms. He raised his eyebrows and stopped in
his tracks.
“ What’s going on here?” You smiled
“ She just had a her, and I wanted to meet her.” You were positively glowing, and Eisuke had a hard time not smiling.
You handed the baby back to its mother, “ I have to use the restroom.” You passed by Eisuke kissing him on the cheek before continuing to the restroom,.
Your friend looked up at Eisuke. “ She’s a natural with children” Eisuke commented.
Her friend looked up and smiled at him sadly. “ Yes, too bad she doesn’t want children, but she will make a great aunt to this beautiful lady.” She said bouncing her baby and putting her finger in its tiny hand.
“ She doesn’t want children?” Eisuke asked, and she shook her head.
“ You didn’t know, I guess I let the cat out of the bag.” Her face fell, “ I’m sorry”
“ Don’t worry about it, I was going to find out eventually.” Eisuke looked towards the table he was to be sitting at. “ I have a meeting, tell her I’ll talk to her tonight.” She nodded, and Eisuke walked off.
When you got back to the table, you sat down. “ Did Eisuke leave for his meeting?” Your friend nodded, then you noticed the saddened expression on her face.
“What’s wrong, did he say something?” She licked her lips.
“ I told him you didn’t want kids, I thought he knew I’m so sorry.” Your stomach flipped.
“ I hadn’t told him yet, I was going to get to it eventually.” You smiled “ It’s okay, I’m not mad.” Your friend let out a breath.
“ Are you sure?” You nodded, “ Yep I’m sure, but how did he take it?” She shrugged her shoulders.
“He looked surprised, but then he excused himself to his meeting.” You looked over at his table nervously.
You and Eisuke were going strong, you hadn’t talked about children. You’ve been together for over a year, but somehow the topic had never come up. You were comfortable with the things as they were, and you had no intention of changing them. Although, if he asked you to marry him you’d probably say yes. Still, you didn’t know if he wanted children or not.

After your lunch, you started your shift. However, you were distracted and all you could think about was how he was going to react when you got back to the penthouse. Your stomach was doing flip flops, and you felt nauseous with nerves. The night went by in a blur, you didn’t talk to anyone, and your friends kept asking if you were okay, and you’d reply with a meek “ I’m just tired “
When your shift was finally over, it was well into the night. You changed in the locker room. Maybe if you were lucky he’d be asleep, or maybe you could text him and say something came up at your parents’ house. You shook your head, this was ridiculous; what were you so scared of? If this ended your relationship so be it, but children weren’t for you. You finished getting dressed and grabbed your things, checking your phone while you walked out the door. Nothing from Eisuke, you didn’t know whether that was good or bad. He generally didn’t text while you were at work, so maybe it was fine.
As you stood in front of the elevator to the penthouse, you took in a deep breath preparing yourself for whatever was about to happen. You let out your breath as the doors opened, and you stepped into the elevator not quite ready, but you had to face this head on. You were scared, but it was better to face it now rather than wait and let the anxiety eat you away.
The elevator stopped and dinged as the doors opened, and there sat Soryu and Baba in the lounge not doing anything in particular. Normally you greet them with a smile, but instead, you remained stoic. “ Hey, _ _ _ !” Baba spoke excitedly. “ Hi” Was all you said in a soft voice, and Soryu looked up from his book. “ Are you okay?” You forced a smile and nodded. Then again for probably the hundredth time you said “ I’m just tired.” Soryu nodded, “ Best get to bed then”
“ I will, thanks Soryu. Goodnight Baba.” Baba smiled “ Sweet dreams princess.”
You walked up the stairs to Eisuke’s suite with your heart pounding. When you closed the door behind you. You turned to see Eisuke in the living room with his laptop watching a crime show, well more like listening as his attention was on his laptop.
“ _ _ _” He said your name, not looking at you.
“ Hi” Is what you said, because you couldn’t think of anything else to say.
“ How was your day?” He asked casually. You took your shoes off, then walked forward.
“ It was okay.” You answered. He was still looking at the computer screen.
“ Just okay? You didn’t enjoy meeting your friend’s baby?” He closed the laptop and placed it on the side table. He finally looked over to you, as he waited for an answer.
“Yes” His eyes bore into you
“ Then why was your day just okay?” You crossed your arms uncomfortably.
“ B-because I was worried.” He nodded
“ Hmm,” He hummed “ Did your friend tell you that she let it slip that you don’t want children?” You cleared your throat nervously.
He motioned for you to come closer, “ Come and sit.” You nodded and obeyed sitting in a chair near him.
The trepidation laid heavy upon you. You didn’t know what to expect and you didn’t know what to say to him. He cleared his throat and sat up, as if this were one of his business meetings.
“ I’m not usually one for conversation, I prefer action over communication, however with this specific subject I feel that we need to talk.” He leaned back and crossed his arms then crossed one leg over the other.
“Probably a good decision” You commented, even though you didn’t want to have this conversation you knew it needed to happen. His eyes scanned you. He could tell you were anxious.
“Relax, I’m not going to bite. You know me better than that. I thought I knew you, but apparently you still have secrets.” You narrowed your eyes
“ Don’t give me that” You bit at him sternly “ We’ve never talked about children, I would have eventually told you.” He raised his eyebrows
“Eventually?” You sat up straighter feeling the anger starting to rise within you.
“ Look, I’m sorry. I didn’t know it would make you so angry.”
“Angry? I don’t know that I would describe this emotion as anger” He ran his fingers through his hair and sighed.
“ Why don’t you want children _ _ _? Did something happen in your life to make you decide this?”
You inhaled deeply. Here was the real conversation and you had to put your emotions on the line.
“ Nothing happened in particular, I’m not made for motherhood. Sure I enjoy kids, but you can always give them back to their parents. I mean think about it, while they’re little you’re sleep deprived, and then when they’re teenagers they're uncontrollable, what fun would that be? I know it’s not for me, I want to live my life without being responsible for a tiny human. What if I raise them wrong? What if something happens? What if they’re sick? What if I get cancer and die then they’d have no mother?”
Eisuke put his hand up “ Stop, you’re spiraling”
“That’s another thing, with the bipolar and anxiety and depression that runs in my family, I can’t pass that down to them.” Eisuke shook his head
“ You’ve had challenges with your mental illness I’ll admit that, but have you ever been around children, or was this baby you met today the first time you’ve been around a child?”
“Kind of.” You paused, “Not really” You studied Eisuke’s expression, he remained cool and collected as always.
“ Do you want children?” You finally asked him. He frowned
“ No, we’re talking about you. Don’t deflect.” You ground your teeth together
“ Just answer the damn question, Eisuke!”
He sighed, then regarded you for a moment before speaking. “ One day I’d like to have children, yes.”
You looked him over, and he looked as conflicted as you felt. “How?” You stopped yourself from saying the words. His gaze landed on you as he waited for you to continue. He was always so patient with you. You closed your eyes tightly took a deep breath then opened them again.
“ How are we going to make this work ?” His brow furrowed at the question.
“ I don’t know _ _ _, I’m trying to figure that out.”
“ Your opinion can’t be swayed?” He asked
You shook your head, “ No, Eisuke, my mind has been made up for a long time.”
He uncrossed his legs “ I see”
It was quiet between the two of you, and finally, you gazed at him. “ Eisuke, I love you, but we want very different things and if neither of us is willing to give in, then why prolong the pain?” His eyes widened, and he stood up, looming over you.
“You’re breaking up with me?”
“I am” You stood up then placed your hand on his cheek. Tears escaped your eyes. You kissed him on the cheek. “ Goodbye Eisuke, I’ll get all my things tomorrow.”
Eisuke remained silent, too stunned to speak. He watched you put your shoes back on, and put on your sweater. You looked back and took one last long look at him and left the suite. He sat back down and stared mindlessly out the window as if in a daze.
You walked quickly down the stairs and Soryu raised an eyebrow upon seeing your red face, Baba tilted his head. “ What’s wrong, princess? You and the boss get into a fight. You pressed the elevator button. “ We broke up. I hope we can see each other around.” You said wiping a tear away. The elevator opened and you stepped in not wanting to look back. You wanted to forget everything about your life with Eisuke except for your friends.
Soryu and Baba looked at each other, and they stood at the same time and walked up the stairs to Eisuke’s suite and opened the door. He continued to look out the window and hardly noticed it when they came into the room.
“Eisuke” Soryu, said his name, and Eisuke looked towards the two men standing in the entryway.
“ I’m guessing you heard the most recent news?” He asked seemingly in charge of his emotions.
“ Don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine.” Soryu regarded Eisuke
“Are you sure? Because where I’m standing you don’t look like you’re going to be fine.” Soryu said with concern for his long-time friend.
“ What happened Boss?” Eisuke narrowed his eyes
“ It’s just not going to work out” He snapped
Baba snapped his jaw shut before more words came spewing out, and he made the situation worse. Then Baba got a call on cell.
“ I’m sorry gentleman I have to take this” Soryu nodded and Baba left the suite.
“ She doesn’t want children, and I do.” Soryu’s eyes opened wide then he walked to Eisuke to sit where _ _ _ was sitting earlier.
“ I didn’t know you wanted children.”
“ I need someone to carry on the business.” Soryu tilted his head.
“ You love her I know you do, is something like this really worth losing her over, especially when you can use another child as heir. One of my future children for example or Baba’s or Ota’s or god forbid Mamoru’s. Maybe even your sister’s, that might be the best option since she’s a blood relative, but if she doesn’t agree to it I will and I know the other guys would too.”
Eisuke nodded, “ Maybe you’re right, Soryu. I’ll have to think about it.” Soryu stood up and squeezed Eisuke’s shoulder, “ I’m here for you, whatever you decide, but I think it’d be a pity to give up the love of your life for something so trivial. Don’t take too long thinking.” Soryu walked out of his suite, leaving Eisuke to his thoughts.
The next morning after a fitful sleep you made your way to the penthouse to get the rest of your things. You tentatively went up to the penthouse, and Eisuke stood in the kitchen attempting to make coffee, but failing. “ Are you trying to make your own coffee?” His gaze landed on you and you laughed. “ You think this is funny?” You tried to compose yourself “I’m sorry. Let me” He moved away from the coffee machine. He cleared his throat getting ready to speak.
“ I think emotions were high last night, and now that we’ve both cooled down I thought we could talk while being more level headed.” You swallowed and looked him up and down. “ My decision hasn’t changed Eisuke.” He nodded, and carefully combed a loose piece of your hair that had come out of your ponytail behind your ear. “ Maybe mine has.” You looked up at him with wonder, “ What? How?”
“Before you broke up with me I didn’t get a chance to say why I wanted children.” The coffee cup was done filling and you began putting sugar and cream in it just the way he liked. “ Okay, please continue. I’m listening.” He crossed his arms. “ I need someone to take over the business when I’m no longer here.” You handed him the coffee cup. “ All done” He took a sip and smiled, “ That’s kind of grim don’t you think?”
“ It’s the reality of life, anyways I Soryu gave me the idea, but to name another child heir whether it’s my sister’s or one of the guys’ I don’t have to have children to have an heir.”
“ You’d really do that?” The edges of his lip slightly lifted, and he nodded.
“ I would, I can live without children, but I cannot live without you.” You smiled sincerely, took the cup out of his hands, and set it down then pulled on his tie and pressed your lips to his in a needy kiss. He smiled into the kiss and slipped his tongue into your mouth, tangling it with your tongue and exploring every inch of your mouth. You pulled away and hugged him inhaling his scent.
“ I love you Eisuke, thank you for doing this for us.” He snickered and kissed the top of your head.
“ And I love you” He grabbed his coffee cup and your hand pratically dragging you “ I want to finish what we started.”
