PER CHI L’HA VISTO E PER CHI NON C’ERA... Questa è la foto conclusiva della European Jazz Conference che si è temuta a Novara dal 12 al 15 settembre scorsi. È stato un grande avvenimento culturale e musicale. Credo che qualcuno di voi ne abbia letto sui giornali o sui social network. La Conference, oltre ai lavori riservati agli addetti del settore provenienti da 40 paesi (quaranta), ha offerto moltissimi concerti aperti al pubblico e gratuiti (solo il concerto di gala al Teatro Coccia era a pagamento). Ebbene, a questi concerti i novaresi presenti si contavano sulle dita delle mani, forse anche di una sola. Gli spettatori venivano da mezzo mondo, ma novaresi, pochi, pochissimi, sempre gli stessi. Ora, da una città che ha 105.000 abitanti e tra questi quasi settemila studenti universitari e altrettanti studenti di licei e scuole superiori, migliaia di docenti, due teatri, almeno cinque istituzioni o scuole musicali, da una città così, francamente mi sarei aspettato un interesse maggiore. E anche Voi, cari amici di Facebook, che vi sperticati a tessere le lodi di quello che scrivo, ad apporre like a profusione, voi, dove eravate? Non avete mai sentito il desiderio di ascoltare una musica diversa dalle solite consolatorie melodie? Non vi è sorta la curiosità di sapere come suonavano i musicisti chiamati a Novara dall’European Jazz Network? Non vi è passata per la testa l’idea che Novara fosse sede di un “evento” importante, tanto importante da aver fatto arrivare in città quattrocento persone da tutto il mondo? Oppure credete che gli “eventi” siano solo la sagra della salamella o la presentazione del libro di Ciccio Formaggio (che poi lo vende al vicino di casa e a suo cugino)? Perché ai concerti non si è nemmeno intravista l’ombra di un’autorità? Perché, il jazz è “difficile”? Perché, gli universitari sono solo agli aperitivi? Perché, gli insegnati dovevano stare a casa a correggere i compiti? Forse non è chiaro che è stata l’European Jazz Conference a dare lustro alla città e non viceversa. Se ci siete battete un colpo...

Response to ECJ Ruling on Headscarves

 In response to the ruling of the European Court of Justice on the wearing of headscarves a Church of England spokesman said:

“This ruling raises significant questions about freedom of religion and its free expression. Whether it be Sikhism and the wearing of turbans and kara through to the wearing of a cross.

“In preferencing ‘freedom to conduct a business” above the free expression of faith the ruling potentially places corporate interest above those of the individual.

Equally troubling is the assumption of “neutrality” within the ruling. The imposition of blanket bans – whilst often seeking honourable outcomes - may represent a worldview based on dogmatic or ideological assumptions which may unjustly limit individual rights.”   

The Rt Revd Nicholas Baines, the Bishop of Leeds, said:

“It is important that we study this ruling in more detail and work out its implications in different scenarios and for different groups in society. Inevitably, this judgement once again raises vital questions about freedom of expression (not just freedom of religion), and shows that the denial of freedom of religion is not a neutral act, contrary to how it might be portrayed. There is no neutral space. Furthermore, it illustrates how far we have to go as a secular society in working out what freedom of expression actually means.

“Secondly, it once again illustrates the problem in a 'rights culture' of whose rights take priority in the hierarchy when rights collide - and according to which criteria they should be judged.

“There is clearly more work to be done in relation to religious literacy.”
