You've got a history in Bassline, you sang on S-X's "Take Time" and then there's "Animal Riddim"; it seems as though you're looking to change attitudes in the scene. Is it an intention of yours?
Not really, to be honest. All I've decided to do is utilise every bit of my vocal ability. I've been spitting and singing actively since 2000, so way before Bassline. It was just a Garage thing, back then, until Grime came along.
People have always known me for being an MC, but I have sang for as long as I've been writing bars; just nowhere near as much. Plus, I just feel that if you can sing and rap/MC, why not do both? Why restrict yourself to doing one, when you know both sides are good enough? There's a few good artists around now who do both and that's a positive thing.
Your latest track, "Animal Riddim", has sparked attention, because you and Papez have approached Grime at a completely different direction to most. Did it just turn out this way, or were you looking to make your music stand out from the rest? Bwoy, it just turned out that way, you know [Laughs]. I've known Papez for years on end now, from going college together, back in 2001. Over the years, he has evolved into a wizard. He makes everything - with some that are just different to the norm. When I was at the studio with P, getting some tracks, it wasn't even "Animal Riddim" that I had my sights on. But when I wrote to it and vocalled it, I knew we'd created a madness [Laughs].
Are you looking to come with new music more consistently from now on?
Yes, definitely. Over the years, I haven't been as consistent as I should have been. You can say I was sleeping on myself, but now I've woken up. Consistency is the key. Persistence pays.
Although you haven't been as active in the scene, have you been keeping on top of new releases and radio?
Yes, I see and hear what's going on and it seems like people are getting a break out here. Artists from our scene have hit the charts consistently and the underground scene is still buzzing. The scene is a great place, at the moment. My only hope is that clashing doesn't take the Grime scene way underground, like it did the last time around.
You deal with a lot of genres, but what is Grime missing these days?
More singers.
Are you looking to follow "Animal Riddim" up with a longer body of work? A mixtape or EP, maybe?
I'm not really sure, at the moment. An EP is a possibility [though]. Probably drop a few freestyles, put some tracks out there. I just want to do what I feel is right for me and remain consistent.
What's to come, for you, in 2012?
Well, as long as I keep my attitude right, a whole lot, hopefully. Like I said, I just want to be consistent and give the people good music they can vibe to and relate to.
