Ney one of Napoleon’s best generals
De Comeau was an observer at the battle of Elchingen. He admired Marshal Ney’s abilities!
As far as I know, Ney was one of Napoleon's best generals, because he had no particular method and acted according to circumstances, both in attack and defense. Bonaparte never varied: after winning a battle, he drove the enemy forward by rout. So Ney accompanied him, leaving his army corps to follow. With extraordinary activity, he came and went in this crowd, picked up the stragglers, made them march in good order, and, for himself or for others, always made up a reserve which would have stopped a defeat, or arrived as reinforcement; and this, always so timely, that the victory was really his. He made flank movements well. A stranger, examining the great army on the move without knowing the Emperor, might have believed that Ney was in command; when alone, he appeared and acted as though not under the influence of Napoleon.
