question about the eldritch au, is magic something passed down through the generations, like a family recipe, or is it something you learn on your own? also was there any inspiration for this series? like folklore or other books you’ve read?
ello!! To answer this, pretty much! (more under the cut, as always)
Whenever i manage to actually write more witch lore (sorry for the fic drought btw! i've been real busy irl lately and will continue to be so for a while) i am going to explain how that magic works.
so in the beeduo installment, i mention a book 'lavender for luck' (this is actually the title of a sanders sides fic i love dearly by lovelylogans on ao3!) which is supposedly the backbone of witch literature! it is, actually. It essentially is the closest thing that a very spread out group of people have to a unified text- american witches and even californian witches (along with all their subclasses) have their own thing going on, due to a break in communication during spats in history like witch hunts, where communication had to be cut off for safety reasons. however, before all that nonsense, witch society (yes!! internationally too! witches come from all around the world, actually, not just the usa and britain) managed to compile Lavender for Luck, which basically lists out things like recipes for potions, protections, base spells and sigils to build more complex ones, etc, etc.
it's a really good base book, but individual witch families (and covens) have their own literature that they make a point of compiling over their lifetimes and passing down, kind of like cookbooks. The book for wizardry Ranboo uses belonged to his great-aunt, and Tubbo's notes come from his mum. Though, both prefer the notes app on their phones for running notes, only adding things to their personal journals when they feel an experiment is complete.
As for inspirations, I'd say a very (very) vague one would be @/tulipscomeinallsortsofcolors's Love and Other Fairytales verse, a Sanders Sides fanfiction series (I'd highly recommend it- no knowledge of tss canon needed) that my qpp @beating-around-the-berry-bush and I ADORE. What really pushed me to start writing it would be @honeycowinnit's magic verse, because i too, like funky lil magic guys. @asterchonk0 (beloved!!) is directly responsible for a majority of the work you see in the works currently on ao3, borne from discussing the verse with them for like,,, two hours. Also Holly Black!! Heck yeah !!
