I’m also so glad I finally made a “figure skating” playlist alongside my “skating routine” playlist. Cuz yes, while there is some overlap, skating routines is for me to envision potential programs and choreography.
While “figure skating” is to allow me to get lit to Great Spirit and Beautiful Storm and just fucking GO
Lmao my laptop died AND tumblr desktop sucks butt and wouldn’t let me post this no matter how hard I tried....
But I have so many emotions about ASBR and this is gonna be a long ass ranty post. So be prepared under (hopefully if I can figure it out on mobile?) a page break.
Imma use this post as a way for me to discuss my creative process and vision for ASBR (without spoiling the plot, in case someone DOES look at this... but even if yall do, I wouldn’t blame you if yall just scrolled cuz this’ll probably be long. Cuz im a ranty, wordy hoe.)
SO -- “A Single Blue Rose” is the first work that I can say required actual, real CREATIVE work to be put into it. I am basically writing this as if it is my own story and my own world/rules for this universe. I am not treating this piece as a fanfiction. And personally, I wouldn’t personally read it as a fanfiction. I am using Yuri on Ice, the concept of the world and the backstory/names/relationships as the medium and inspiration for my story.
More so than anything, I am using high-level literary devices such as symbolism, figurative language, imagery, narration styles and foreshadowing as if this were an actual novel. Although I in no way shape or form expect ANYONE to read my fic with the intent to analyze my writing like this, that is how I am writing it. Where it can be enjoyed as a plot based story, or where it can be enjoyed just as a study of the characters.... Or as a piece of literature, meant to be explored and analyzed on a deeper level. I have always wanted discussions to be made around works that I have created, like analysis happens in a classroom or a book club. And even though I think ASBR is perfectly fine without that extra layer, I as an author and an artist feel obligated to write it that way because it truly feels like I am using my skills as an author.
The other biggest factor in my writing process/inspiration is my knowledge and study of film and the way television shows are developed/shot/directed.
I was a film major for a period of time, and even though movies and serial-TV shows were not my intended career path, I did study a lot of it, and greatly enjoyed being able to learn about these concepts, and the different ways to experience media. These classes and lessons have impacted every TV show and every movie I have watched/experienced since I took those classes, but it is only now that I am using those constructs and ideas to influence what I am creating.
With that being said, I truly and whole-heartedly believe that I could make a movie or TV show version of “A Single Blue Rose”. (Which of those would work best, I am not sure, because I could see both, but that is an unimportant discussion.)
What I mean by this, is I am not only designing the writing, but the plot, AND the organization of this fic in a style that mimics the shooting of a film, or a limited-series TV show. In a perfect world, the best way for the audience to experience ASBR, would to be through a screen and a camera lens. Where the details, the colors, and the framing are essential to fully understand and experience the story. I have designed the narration, the plot, the details that are told to the reader, and the details that are hidden from the reader, to be as if the reader was watching a TV show.
It is on one hand supposed to be in a fanfic “style”, where the fic is written from the perspective of one character regardless of narration style, and where it is very easy for the reader to insert themselves into the role/place of the main character of the fic. But also, even though I am writing it as a “novel”, I also wanted to avoid the 3rd person unlimited style present in most story based novels.
The style I am actually writing it in, is in the structure of a film/TV series, where strategic forms of Dramatic Irony and reveals/plot twists are the main source of conflict/plot. (Dramatic Irony is the device where something is revealed to the audience before it is revealed to the characters in the story. This is usually used to create “drama” and suspense).
Usually this is done through strategic camera shots, and shifting of the POV/Angle of the camera shots, and the way that they influence how the story is being told. I am 100% using this as the structure for how I write ASBR.
More than anything from the story, I want the descriptions of these “camera shots” to be so vivid and realistic for the audience, where it feels like they can see it, as if they are watching the film for A Single Blue Rose.
Well, there it is! I think that is everything I really needed to talk about and get off my chest right now, so thank you if you actually read this, and I really hope I managed to get all of this across without spoiling anything.
I was just working on a scene that I believe is the first MAJOR instance of Dramatic Irony (outside of the very first scene of the first chapter), and because of how INTENSE this is, and how excited I am as an artist to be writing a piece like this, I just really needed to gush and vent.
I hope that even if ASBR isn’t as popular as Love Letters, and is already longer (WC wise) than I ever imagined it would be, that there are still readers who love this fic. And who at least get half as much enjoyment out of this fic that I do.
