Bill Viola has always treaded a line between video art/installation theater and filmmaking, but to be sure, he is a filmmaker and a great one at that. His methods of distribution and format might be unconventional - you can’t see his work on Netflix - but the mise en scene, camerawork and impact align with the greatest films. I’ve seen his work all over the world, most recently this Electronic Renaissance in Firenze, and I’ve been hypnotized again and again.
