Responsive web design (RWD) is a well known concept on internet nowadays. It is very popular and important because the internet nowadays is mobile, not static. We do not only browse from our desktop anymore, we use tablets and smartphones. RWD has different components. In these components responsive typography is quite new component for users. And for responsive web design it is also an important. It is a quite recently introduced, and is the one we will discuss in today's post.
What is Typography? Typography is the central point of design and typefaces as a means of communication. It has its root in handwritten letter forms, which arrange in some manner. The arrangement includes such as point size, typefaces, line length, white-spaces, tracking and leading.
Responsive Typography:
There are three principles, which you need to keep in mind:
Resizable Type: It means that the text should not only be resizable based on the screen size, but should also be resizable according to user. For a better RWD, you need a perfect font size, which easily resizable according to user choice. The font size should be specified in the style sheet according to different screen sizes.
Optimizing Line Length: It is used to better readability at small scale. Some studies says, the optimal length lies between 50 and 75 characters, but that's just statics. But now most of user browse on different types of screen, which includes smartphones, tablets etc. So, we optimizing the line length according to screen type, whether it is small or large.
Better Contrast: For a responsive typography, users are able not to only change the typeface, the font size and line length, but also the background color, which makes the contrast more powerful or weaker. This is quite difficult to control and have as a feature in a website, but testing different contrasts and deciding on the one that looks best is a very good idea.
Elements of Good Typography: Typefaces and Fonts: Typefaces are the family of fonts, which includes such as sans serif, sans, fantasy etc. Spacing: There are different adjustment to make a good typography such as: Kerning: Space between individual letters Tracking: Space between group of letters Leading: Space between lines of text Apart from that, there are many elements which are: Hyphenation, Rag, Orphan etc.
Conclusion: Responsive typography is a quite new component, so not many people know about it. You basically need to know how to use media queries and to have a bunch-load of devices with different screen sizes to test on.
