A few days ago I was calculating how many calories were in the whole container of deli pastrami and the numbers were like "calories per serving: 70" and then "servings per container 4.5." And I'm looking back on how I did it and this is probably why I was always the last one to turn in math tests. I don't think in numbers, I think in words. So the whole thought processes was this:
Alright so starting out I have 4 70s. So 70 plus 70 would be 7 plus 7 then 0 plus 0. 7 plus 7 is 14 and 0 plus 0 is 0. So connect them and it becomes 140. 140 is 2 70s.
So that's 2 70s, and 2 70s + 2 70s would be 4 70s, as in 4.5. So really it's 140 + 140 right? Yes? Because 70 plus 70 plus 70 plus 70 would be the same as 70 plus 70.... plus.... 70 plus 70.... and that's 4 70s.
Right so I have my 2 70s on the left, and those are 140. And then I have my 2 70s on the right, and those are 140. So now I have 140 plus 140 which is 14 plus 14 and 0 plus 0. 14 plus 14 is 28 and 0 plus 0 is still 0. So all 4 70s is 280. Okay. Noted.
Umm so now I have .5 left, which means half of a serving. And a serving is 1 70, but I need .5 70. So I need half of 70 so half of 70 is uhh. Well, 7 isn't even, so the ones place has to be a 5. And 6 is the even number before 7. And 3 plus 3 equals 6. So it would be 3 and 5 to make 70. So 35 is half of 70. So now I have to add 35 to all 4 70s which was 280
Umm alright so, the 0 and 5 would be added together. And that's just 5. So I'm going to set that aside. Then I have 8 and 3 and that's- uh- that's- 8... 9, 10, 11... that's 11. So I have the 1 stay, and then the other 1 goes up to the 2. So I have 2 plus 1 and then 1 and 5. Right? Yeah. Yeah that's it. So 2 plus 1 is 3 so now I have 3 and 1 and 5 which is 3 1 5. And 3 1 5 is 315. So there's 315 calories in this whole thing. Yes. Yes that's correct.
I'm going to check that on my phone which I've had available to me the whole time and just didn't think to use.
Omg it was right! I did that! In my head! I did a decimal! Hell yeah! I'm so good at this! And it didn't even take me that long! Like... I don't know just a few minutes! I'm not dumb as hell!! I did that!!
Anyway, yeah, that's probably why I always took so long on math tests. And why shoeing my work was so hard. For some reason I don't think in just numbers and mathematical symbols so when I show my work I have to keep translating the words in my head into mathematics and then I get confused and it's a mess.
And shout out to the teachers I've had who have kinda understood that I struggle with this and have helped me try to simplify it for myself, you guys are the real ones.
