Can you please explain what's exactly happening in Sudan?? I don't understand politics at all, all I understood that the military is stopping protesters in the most brutal manner? What they were protesting against and why the hell is the military going after them in such inhuman brutal manner?? Please please explain
Sorry it took me so long to answer, I haven’t had access to my computer, and this will be a semi-long answer.
I am going to simplify the situation and will likely miss things, so I urge you to read more about this online.
The issue started in December of 2018 when there was an uprising fueled in part by the rising prices of food and the shortage of gasoline. The protesters at the time quickly turned the movement into one against the sitting president at the time Omar al-Bashir.
Women were very very heavily involved in spearheading the movement.
*Side note* Bashir was a fucking asshole dictator who had been in power since 89. He has killed THOUSANDS of his people and has displaced thousands more. He has committed many many crimes, and he ruled via violence and terror. The UNGA and the ICC have tried multiple times to condemn him for crimes against humanity (partially because of his role in the war in Darfur) - but Bashir was protected by some members of the Security Council.
The military ousted him from power, helped by certain opposition groups. The General public has tried pressuring them to transition to a democratically elected government (they want elections). They had at first agreed on a 3 year transition plan from military to democratic government, but the military backtracked in May and want to remain in power.
People naturally got pissed off and they have been rising up in acts of civil disobedience, and now the military is cracking down on everything.
The UN has begun moving through aid channels to attempt to help people, and many areas of the UN (UNICEF, and the UN rights division) are pushing hard to pressure the security council. They are also trying to establish talks with the current government so that they can set up a mission in Sudan (outside of Darfur) as they can’t barge in without approval of the country (the only time they can send in a UN peacekeeping force and/or armed soldiers without prior approval is if R2P (right to protect) is triggered).
However, while the UN has begun to act, it is still moving slowly, and the Western medias has been mostly quiet about the issues in Sudan. Most western governments are turning a blind eye. The US government is completely ignoring the situation and has been ignoring it completely since december. Hundreds of people have died, hundreds have been displaced, many many women have been raped as well as men and children.
And the situation there is only getting more and more dangerous with each passing day.
