Lotar was the (illegitimate) son of Romanian author Tudor Arghezi and the Romanian-Jewish teacher Constanța Zissu. He became a collaborator of Georges Bataille, Luis Buñuel, Alberto Giacometti, René Clair, and Jean Renoir, among others.
