It’s been a while
Eli hadn’t had to find a job in a long time. He’d been working at the same hospital for over eight years, which for him was a lifetime. Yet here he was, trawling the streets, beating the pavement, selling his goddamned soul it felt like. All for what? Polite ‘thank you’s and ‘we’ll be in touch’s. He was tired, and almost broke. It was late October and the weather was taking a turn for the worst, his breath rose above the traffic lights and dissipated in the night air.
He wasn’t far from his hotel when he heard it. It was faint at first, with the city noise blurring out any kind of human voice. But sure enough he could hear someone calling for help, they had to be close. “Hello?!” He yelled, and the people on the streets around him looked at him like he was insane. They parted around him afraid they might catch the crazy looking in his eye. “Hello? Please! You need help?!” He could hear a few people muttering that he was the one who needed help, but his task was accomplished, he could hear the person ever so slightly now, and they were close. Rushing down the alleyway he found a body hunched over and bloodied, “Oh my god what happened to you? It’s going to be okay, I’m a doctor.”
