task 002 || the dog days are over

okay disclaimer i wrote this for my creative writing class. i would never spend this much time on a task because i'm lazy. felix gets the happy memory while travis gets the sad one because i'm a sadistic bastard here we go

Running was supposed to be a freeing experience, right? Everyone who loved running always said how much it invigorated them and how much it did for their body. Running for your life was different, Felix thought.

When Felix escaped his house, he didn’t actually expect to be running for his life. Somehow, he had expected to sneak away in the dead of night and actually get away without any problems. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but he had kept that image in his mind. The air would be cool, kissing him goodbye as he walked down the street. His head would be held high, knowing he had finally won. He had dreamed about the day when he could finally set foot outside of his house and know that he was never going to come back and never have to see his parents' faces ever again. However, that wasn't what happened. His parents heard him climbing out the window, and all of the black face paint and dark clothing in the world couldn't have helped him then. They had to have seen him out their window, running off into the night. How else would they have known to take off after him?

They surely hadn’t heard him climb out of bed or even open the window. Felix made sure to be quiet, taking every possible precaution. He had been working on his plan for what seemed like months, but he didn’t have an idea what to do when it went wrong.

As he ran, Felix had to admit the terror was kind of invigorating, or maybe that was just the adrenaline racing through his veins. He knew that he had to find some way to get away from his parents and fast. They were closing in on him, however drunk they may be. They weren't too smart, but they didn't seem to be slowing. His arms pumping, he could feel the stabbing pain in his chest as he tried to bring more air into his lungs. It was impossible to catch his breath now, and he knew he had to stop soon.

Ducking around a corner, he spotted what might be his salvation: a bunch of scraggly, thick bushes. The thought of jumping into them almost brought him to tears, but there was no other option. He braced himself for the thorns as he took his leap of faith. Cursing under his breath as the thorns dug into his side, he wondered just how much pain it would take to finally be rid of his parents. He pushed himself further into the bushes, trying not to make any noise. He could handle the pain for just a few minutes more. Just after he hid himself well enough, his parents sped past. Felix smiled to himself as they went screaming off into the night. When would they realize that he wasn’t there, and they were screaming at nothing? Hopefully, it would be a while. They were a sight to see, his mother in her fluffy dress robe and slippers and his father in just a pair of pajama pants. Now he just had to find another way to the train station. That wasn’t going to be too hard, right? He knew this town like the back of his hand, and his hiding place gave him a chance to think.

So, Felix waited. After what seemed like hours, he started to stretch.  The bushes had covered him in a layer of dirt and grime, and he made a move to brush some of it off. After a few attempts, however, he knew it would be impossible to get fully clean. Now, it was time to focus on getting out. Nervous about getting caught, he took it slowly. Climbing out of the bushes themselves was an ordeal, and he got caught many times on the stupid branches trying to hold him back. Maybe they were telling him to stay hidden, but he didn't listen. Once he was out, he crept along. What surprised him was that he got off of the street without any problems. That should have been his first warning. Nothing could be that easy.

That was when Felix felt a hand grasp his shoulder. Freezing, he braced himself for the next blow, knowing that there was no escape. He had been foolish to think that he even had a chance to get away.

Waking with a start, Felix sat straight up. His heart was racing, and he wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans. It was clear he wasn't anywhere close to his parents, which meant he wasn’t going to get beaten again. That thought didn’t calm his pounding heart, though. He glanced out the window on his right, trying to get his bearings. Looking up and seeing the sky zoom by, he realized he was on a train. Stretching, he stood up and started walking around his compartment, trying to get the memories of his dream far from his mind.

He wasn't home anymore, so why was he worried?  He was beginning to realize that he wasn't free, not yet at least. He didn't know how long these nightmares would last, but they were obviously not going to go away anytime soon. That was the thought that hurt most of all. The ghosts of his parents would still be there, manipulating him just as they always had.

Pacing his compartment was giving him no relief. He wasn't exactly sure if he would be able to relax.  Looking out into the darkness, Felix saw the stars shining overhead. Somehow, they reassured him. He was safe, for now at least. Their presence was calming to him in a way that he couldn’t understand. They were always there, watching over him as he slept. Now, they were watching over his escape, and making sure that nothing would go wrong. There was no way that he was could be caught on the train, unless his parents had followed him there. If he thought about that, he knew that he would just make himself more worried. So, he took a deep breath and began his pacing again.

The ticket that he had been clutching in his hand told him that he was heading to a town in Maine. Felix was just hoping that it would be far enough away from his parents to give him peace. He wouldn't miss his home at all. For Felix, just thinking about the town dredged up all of these bad memories he couldn't bear to think about once more. Maine would be his new start. There, people would care for him, and they would accept him. Maybe he would find a new friend, or a new family that he could call his own. He would be independent and strong, unlike bach at home where he was weak and dependent on his parents. He wasn't going to let them control his life again.

Felix had worked out a plan already, and he was confident that wherever he ended up, he would be in a good place. The thought of leaving had always scared him, right up until he had walked out the door. Then he realized that this was what he was supposed to do. He was finally free. No one could keep him down anymore.

TASK #02 – Best/Worst Memory {{ PART ONE }}

The best memory of Bailey King's Life

With a deep breath Bailey stood off stage, waiting for her cue in the performance. Her toes wiggling in her pointe shoes. She was nervous, and scared, mostly because she still hadn't felt like she'd hit the last move correctly. Of course, everyone told her it had been perfect, but not to her. There was always something else she needed to do, or she simply didn't feel like she needed to be dancing. When the moment came, Bailey ran out onto the stage and gave the best preformance that the company has seen in ages.

Being only twelve years old, she became a permanent fixture alined with the senior dancers. Rarely if at all dancing with the junior dancers.
