Elise Nicole Soderburgh was never planned. Her mother had been knocked up on a trip to see her friend in Muddy Waters where she had an affair with a man named Noah Soderburgh. Her mom hadn’t figured out she was pregnant until she was back in Chicago and away from Noah. When she had Elise she had planned on raising her in a good home with a loving mother and a decent life. However, plans quickly changed when her mother fell back into her ways of drugs. Her mother’s idea of an ideal family life slowly began to crumble around them. Their suburban home turned into an apartment on the Southside of Chicago, her mom’s day job as a receptionist turned into night stays and late hours to make ends meet, and Elise began to have a whole different life than was planned for.
Elise began to see the her mother only cared about herself and unless the law got involved, she would have neglected Elise all together. The only time she acted like a good mother was when Elise’s father came to visit. Her mom would put on an act that would stay up until he was gone. Elise thought about running away to live with her father but every time she would come close, her mother would stop her. That was until she got word that her father had been arrested and was in prison.
Once she had no where to go, no where to runaway to, she had to deal with the life she had. That meant not knowing if she would have dinner that night or if her mom would even come home and if she did what man she would bring home. Just as much as her mom began to neglect her, she began to neglect her mother. She began to distance her as much as possible because she hated her life and blamed her mother for it. That all changed when she was 15 and came home to a man sitting on her couch with her mom leaning against a wall behind him. As it turned out, her mom had been using drugs from this man and was behind on payments, many of them. She didn’t have any payments so instead she offered up Elise. A mother offered up her daughter. She tried to fight but the man was twice her size. He raped her and told her he would be back for another payment shortly after.
That moment was the moment Elise knew she needed to get out. It wasn’t long after that her father was released from prison. In the middle of the night she packed a bag and snuck out without a single look back. She showed up at her father’s the next day and has been with him ever since. She never told him why she left her mother out of fear and shame but leaving was the best decision she could have made.

Elise had always been an optimistic kid even with the life she was dealt. She tried to make the best out of situations by dreaming and making things up to distract her from the world around her. She still is a dreamer and sometimes thinks that her dreams will stay as they are, dreams. Elise can come off as extremely outgoing and social but it is just how she appears. In reality she is reserved and has never spoke about her past to anyone. She thinks it’s easier to bottle it up inside than to tell anyone. Elise has extremely low self worth due to her mother’s neglect and the rape making her feel as if she exists solely to be used which makes her excel at ‘faking it’ to everyone else. Elise dreams of having the life her mother originally intended for her. To get married, have a kid, live in a suburban house, and maybe…just maybe be happy. But once again, Elise thinks that all that will ever be is a dream.
